No, you do not "have to have" a liquid cooler for this CPU.

You will need a top notch air cooler. You can also mess with PBO to undervolt and get better temps and power consumption. The phantom spirit for 35 dollars is a good option.

This or Intel i9 9900k. I genuinely don't know. I currently have the i9 but would like to upgrade.
this and i'm normally more of an intel builder. the 9900k is too old to spend money on. the only people who should be buying those are people who have a z370 or z390 board and want to keep the build going a little longer and replace an i5. the 5950x is a great multitasking chip that is still pretty decent to game on. you also get to use cheap ddr4 so the build can be fairly inexpensive. maybe $1300 with a 750w psu and 4070 super + 32gb ram. that's a good performance value for the $$

oldest intel i would consider building is the 12700k if you found a deal

You can but these don't have iGPU so you still need to get a budget gpu for video out.

I remember about two years ago when 5950's were going for $1000 and retailers were selling out. It's crazy how much they've come down in price. Seems like a steal for a 16C/32T ryzen.
Nope, your memory are bad, buy new memory stick. Smilie
Even at release date Nov 5, 2020 - $799.
When I got it Apr 2022 at Microcenter - $519 before coupon.

If you have a microcenter around it be best to probably go with the 7700x combo deal for $369. 7700x is on par or better than the 5800x3d for gaming and is as fast with multi core as the 5900x. Plus you then have a upgrade path for atleast 2 more generations.
People who watch such CPU, need more cores/threads, and not for gaming purposes.

Yes. 5950x is VERY hot and NEED liquid cooling for intensive work.
I use EVGA CLC 280mm All-In-One and even at fan/pump's full speed 5950x work at 70 Celcius degree.

I'm confused, never heard it.
Some kind of mad CPU mining or what?

I have a 3600X and after looking at the benchmarks I'm not sure a <20% gain is worth $400

This is really crazy how small the performance improvement is between 3600x and 5950x. I don't blame 5950x, but praise 3600x

Pretty sure you can do what you please.

You have to spec and find your own stuff. Thats part of the fun. Search for pcpartpicker that will help with compatability.
Is there anything like a "picking pc parts for dummies" for people like myself who have been somewhat living under a rock? I was never a big pc gamer, but I used to build computers a couple decades ago and knew what I was doing back then. I'm pretty sure the fundamentals are all the same, but I don't know what components are the best (other than storage) and I'm not really sure where to learn. There are some games I'd like to check out and my laptop is just too weak, so I've been thinking about throwing something together.

I have an older full size tower that I haven't turned on in over a decade. Could I gut that and use it with today's motherboards?

For some reason, I thought they all had video capability built into the cpu nowadays, so I really appreciate this information.

My current cpu and I love it but I'm upgrading next zen iteration. Should be a substantial jump for anyone running a zen 1/2 or 8/9th gen Intel. I'll only advise upgrading to this though if you already have an am4 system and could use the 16 cores. If not go zen 4 or wait for zen 5.
Same boat here. I am perfectly happy with 5950x but projected performance gains for 9000 series with 3D VCache look insane.

1. I like 5950x but it's hot and I hear 7950x just almost the same but factory overclocked so much hotter (TDP up from 105W to 170W) and chip is small so I skip 7000 generation.
2. 3D VCache it's more for games, not work, right?

Yes 3d cache is more for games but as far as the 7950x goes it's designed to run at 95c(the whole zen4) but if you get the 3d v cache versions they don't even hit that at all. AMD might've upped the power but these things are efficient... especially when compared to Intels counterparts.

Isn't this kind of a funky pairing, given the target audience of the 5950X? I'd expect it to be paired with a nice X570 board. Not that B550 is bad, but it's definitely more of a value-minded chipset which is a bit of an odd match for a prosumer/entry workstation CPU.

I'm currently running a 5950X with an ASUS ProArt X570 Creator motherboard and have few complaints. Don't agree that liquid cooling is a must, though; a capable air cooler is sufficient. My tower is built with a Noctua NH-D15S which along with a high airflow case like the Fractal Meshify 2 Compact can handle benchmarking more intense than the vast majority of real-world workloads.

Need powerful MB with good VRM, it's mostly X570 but not all even X570 have it.

your cooler cost even more than my EVGA CLC 280 AIO (got for $60).
Good AIO cost the same or even cheaper than good air cooler but more efficient.
I just don't understand why people buy expensive air coolers, it's overpriced.
And such monsters take A LOT of space inside PC case, it's inconvenient.
