Use a little soapy water spray, it'll let you position the sticker and just fully press it down when it's perfect. It's how Lego does it internally.
Looks like they didn't want to add all the decals to the plane to make it accurate. I mean, I don't really blame them, but it's not entirely accurate, and I'm sure not going to look for replacement decals.

I mean to be accurate weren't then in a motorcycle and sidecar? Or am I mixing up different scenes?

Huh, I've always referred to this statement from Lego, which says to use a window cleaner:

That was the first part. I think the plane dropped a bomb in the road and they drove into it, then they stole the car from a guy working on it.
