Specs make this look like a very decent entry level full suspension at 1120. Boost 29, good travel, decent starter dropper (I own multiple fox, pnw, and transx) low-end but not annoyingly bad components, current thru-axle recon silver fork is stiff enough for a beginner to love for a few years, hydraulic brakes. I haven't looked for any reviews but it definitely ticks lots of boxes for that price.... Highly upgradable platform.

For example, microshift 10x runs on Shimano HG hub, so it's an easy swap to 12x (10-50 sram NX or GX, for example). Recon fork could be swapped for a lyric later on, or better. Recon silver has heavy steel stancions, but is otherwise fine.
It's not as easy as throwing on a SRAM cassette. Anything lower than 11 with be running a SRAM XD or XDR Freehub. I didn't look into the wheel specs on this but most cheap bikes use cheap hubs that are difficult to find compatible parts (ie no XD Freehub to fit).

Anyone who has more experience with mountain biking, do you think have less than 2 inches of stand over height would be a problem? I think the large frame, I have about 1.5 inches of stand over height but I think I am willing to chance it for the upgrade.

edit: thanks for the downvote dipstick - very helpful!

It might even be closer to 2 inches but I am basing it off measurements I've made.

No, won't be issue since you drop seat post with push of a button

Thanks for the response. I thought stand over height was the bar that runs from the front of the bike to the back of the bike - that doesn't adjust with the dropper post - i thought that was simply to adjust the seat when going downhill?

I guess what I am really asking do you think it is possible to ride comfortably on a bike that might be slightly too big?

Experts please...

I'm thinking of building my first premium mountain bike.
Frame needs to be (well) under $5500. If this is a financially wrong way to do it, e.g. you can buy one complete bike for less etc. I like to wrench now and then.

Usage: trails and small jumps. Dual suspension wanted.

Which frame would you buy? Thanks!

If that 6% difference is enough to matter to you climbing then the high end difference between a 30 and 32 chainring isn't something you need to be worrying about on a 30+lb full suspension mountain bike.
LOL, I guess I just ride more challenging terrain than you do. And that's fine, the important thing is that you are out there enjoying your bike.

Don't do it. If the standover is that low, the reach will probably be too long resulting in discomfort and poor handling. Plus, it might be a danger in jumping off on uneven ground. Regardless of pricing, it's a bad deal if it doesn't fit properly.

Bad idea financially and overall if you aren't sure you will even do the hobby long term and are also pretty new to even come up with 5.5k Budget...which is way overkill.... amazing options under 3k now, YouTube on best value mountain bikes

Buying a complete bike is almost always the least expensive way to go. Only reason to buy frame only is if you already have most of the parts, or you don't want to spend the time to part out. I've done both and would just buy complete and ride until those parts break, and then just upgrade then.

So many sales on every type of bike now - the industry is still reeling from huge post-covid inventory surplus and need to dump so many '22/'23 model bikes. I bought a FS and HT MTB on planetcyclery.com for 50% off in last 2 months so they may have good deals.

standover is really nothing to worry about as one is almost always standing on the side. Shoes, boots and pedals makes a difference as does tires. Don't sweat it.

Costco currently has the intense 951 trail for $2000. Carbon. Fox 36. Nx group set. Dropper post. Trp brakes.

This is a pretty slick deal. Not as good as the Vitus Mythique VRX deal a couple months ago (that bike had a much better fork, better shock, better brakes, better crankset, better wheels/rims, arguably better tires, and a slightly better drivetrain), but GT is not going bankrupt AFAIK. Per the GT website, this bike uses WTB STX i25 rims, which are tubeless capable.
Definitely not as good as the Vitus Mithique VRX deal, that was a step up in all regards.

This is is however better than currently available FS bikes at a similar price point. The GT is a much better suspension design than for example the Giant Stance 2 or the Polygon Siskiu D7.

Their 50% off bikes are gone and I'm not aware of any other sellers with that kind of sale going on. I'm trying not to spend more than $1000.
