Even with shipping that's a great deal on the Altra Lone Peak.

It is likely an agreement they have with New Balance.

A similar scenario is mentioned in their help section of the site:

What does "made for a major retailer/brand" mean?
Products with the bullet point "made for major retailer" are purchased from famous name brands and catalogs as overstocks or seconds. To carry their product, we have reached an agreement with these vendors to not advertise the actual brand name. All of our "made for a major retailer/brand" items offer significant savings off their original retail price.

Are these good for everyday walking and pavement running, or just for trails? I'm a runner and I've been using their Torrin and Escalante, but I think the ones that fit me well are discontinued, looking for something potentially more rugged if I can walk in them in comfort for long distances, and use them for running when I'm traveling and I don't have my running shoes.

I hear you. I like to keep a pair dedicated for my indoor home treadmill use (not at public gym) - then a dedicated outdoor pair. Usually keep the less desirable color scheme for indoor. I'm a sucker for a shoe deal. I just switched to the NB Propel V4 for this season. Happy with them so far... Snagged another pair.

Thanks OP.

Finding out I'm a sucker for a shoe deal as well.

If it's a decent looking sneaker and under $40 I'll most likely grab it.

Pro tip - go to a store - try on different shoes and make note of each manufacturer and the size you wear in it. (Basically a size by maker cheat sheet).

Wait for slick shoe deal - and pounce!

I have a few manufacturer sizes I need to make notes on yet. Otherwise I would and jumped on some of these Keen and Salomon hikers. Bummer. Next time.

Sizes vary too much. I range from a 10 to an 11.5 depending on the brand.

Personally I use Lone Peaks for pavement running and more generally for walking and just every day trips. I've actually never used them for trail running. They are the most comfortable shoes I've owned, but the construction isn't very durable. I've found that to be true for Altras in general, so if you have used the Torrin and Escalante and are happy then I don't think you'll be disappointed.

The Fuelcell 4s are the lightest and fastest shoes I own. They weigh less than 11 Oz.
