For removing formaldehyde, a fairly potent carcinogen found in many engineered products in construction, get yourself a spider plant. They did a study a while ago, and it turns out a large spider plant removed as much formaldehyde as a $500 filter unit. Without the cost of charcoal or other filtration media.

I will assume that green spider plants remove more formaldehyde than the pretty yellow/green variegated ones. The yellow areas are not photosynthetically active. All modern construction out-gasses a fair bit of formaldehyde, and newly built mobile homes are awful. I haven't kept up on this over the last decade, so I don't know if regulations have changed, and becoming more permissive or more safety oriented. Even worse there is the problem of largely unregulated imports, like Chinese sheet rock, that have toxic materials we haven't used in those products, in decades, if ever.

Buyer beware, despite the name of the company being "Plants for Pets", these are not actually pet-safe plants. Don't buy them and expect fluffy to be able to safely chew on them.

There seems to be just as many sources saying it isn't toxic as there are sources saying it's mildly toxic (stomach ache and/or diarrhea).
