I'd been a happy Secondipity customer for years and vouched for them here on SD (see post history), but they've adopted new, consumer-unfriendly policies. Reports that they're sending items that aren't actually refurbished, rejecting returns, and banning customers who return are 100% accurate.
My last couple purchases didn't meet condition criteria. Got a Sony AZ3000ES receiver ($1000 item) with stickers on it and a sizable dent to case. They claimed it was in acceptable condition for a refurb and made no effort to address other than suggesting I return it. Didn't provide a paid shipping label (policy violation). When I left negative feedback, they banned me from bidding on other items.
Not the top shop it used to be. Can no longer recommend.
Having said that, having both the xm5's and the xm4's, I am not sure that I can tell of a real improvement.
I keep meaning to do a side-by-side. But...if I need to do a side-by-side to know, I am wondering if that does not tell the story.
Don't get me wrong. The xm5's sound fantastic. But so do the xm4's. And truthfully, I kind of prefer the build of the xm4's. They fold up into a smaller case.
I am not saying to not buy the xm5's. You will not be disappointed. But if you are trying to save a little more, then I would give a hard look at the xm4's too.
Recently got Secondipity's refurb XB910Ns and they came in flawless condition, minus packaging (still got the hard case and all cables). They sent the wrong color - twice - but did offer a full refund but I'll suck it up for the price.
Logitech G Cloud from them was also perfect condition for dirt cheap.
Worth mentioning their customer service sucks in the sense of, they don't read your message fully and give generic copypaste responses, BUT they are great about refunds/replacements policy-wise.

Just going to make sure I clean them well.
I've had mostly-good luck with secondipity though. I ordered a pair of WH1000XM4's last year though and they arrived in flawless condition and I absolutely love them but my wf1000xm2's died after a couple of months (were replaced for free though)

Like new condition. No original packaging or manuals. But the headset and case seem new.
I upgraded from XM3's and I am disappointed that the noise canceling isn't better — it's great but about the same between the headsets. There is a big improvement in style though and as a heavy user, I really appreciate some small UX improvements, like the spoken prompts, audible chimes, and touch controls. It all feels more refined.

EDIT - got these 2 weeks ago for the same price from same vendor. Yesterday they had all 3 colors in stock.

Totally unscientific anecdote! And not exactly what you are describing — for me, the trigger is my own movement; not app changes or phone state.
edit: if you haven't done so, you might look at the settings in Sony Headphones Connect and disable the "Ambient Sound" setting. I find it makes the crackling sound you describe. Perhaps if you disable it in the settings, it will stop entirely.
