In a pinch (or on the side of the road) both methods are workable, just not the ideal method. Heck, in a pinch a butter knife works in place of a flathead however you won't find many of those in someone's tool bag.
The amount of money and effort some people will waste pretending to save money. They'll end up nickel and diming themselves into $20 over a decade to avoid spending $2.70 once.
Note: I personally use a small wire brush I already own for multitude of other tasks. No need to raid the fridge or make 3rd grade science volcanoes under my hood
