Thanks for sharing and including all the links to the extras! You can use this 'in the field' with a PPS battery bank; however, I use this at a desk with a dedicated power supply and the silicone cord. I did initially spring for their solder pen holder, but then commissioned this one and it makes life easier https://thangs.com/designer/ZackF...%21-534477

I bought a pinecil along with a bunch of extras a year and a half ago, I already had a hakko, but I wanted something more convenient/travelable for quick jobs (guitar work, various electronics tasks like repairs, replacing batteries, etc.), and it is awesome! I haven't pulled out the Hakko since i got it. I also have the power supply on my work desk which I use daily, love this thing too, best desktop USB charger I have ever had, and I have gone through a lot of them. The V/A display is sweet. Here is what I picked up, along with a small pelican case to store everything in along with solder, etc. Yes the holder sucks, but for $2... it works. I have larger soldering stations w/ helping hands, etc. when needed, linked the main 2 I use below that are decent for the money. Also included links to a couple of good solder... don't cheap out on solder as is makes a huge difference to the ease of the job. Bigger gauge for stuff like guitars, smaller for small electronics:

Pinecil order:

PINECIL – Smart Mini Portable Soldering Iron 1 $25.99
USB TYPE-C TO USB TYPE-C SILICONE POWER CHARGING CABLE - 1 meter length 1 $3.49
USB TYPE-C TO USB TYPE-C SILICONE POWER CHARGING CABLE - 1.5 meter length 1 $3.99
PINECIL Portable Mini Stand 1 $1.99
PINECIL Replacement Tip Contacts 1 $1.00
PINECIL Soldering Tip Set (Fine) 1 $24.99
PINECIL Soldering Tip Set (Gross) 1 $24.99
PinePower - 120W Desktop Power Supply - US version 1 $37.99
PINECIL Break Out Board 1 $3.99

It's $38 after shipping vs $40 with prime shipping on Amazon from the same seller, although I'm not 100% sure the Amazon listing is for the v2. https://www.amazon.com/PINECIL-Sm...B096X6SG13

I own a pinecil and it has replaced my Hakko station. Here is the main reason to buy it direct: If you buy it from Amazon, it is faster and the price is the same once you factor in the shipping costs. If you buy it from Pinecil, you should also get the USB C cable that Amazon doesnt sell. It is a special ultra flexible silicone cable that you can plug into a USB C power supply. The cable is worth it. You can also get the cheap stand (optional) if you dont already have a stand. I dont use it with a battery pack, but you certainly could.

Only $2 savings over Amazon, so the deal is meh.

Don't fall into the trap of believing that regular USB-C charger will work with it. Instead, rummage through your pile of old computer hardware and see if you have an old laptop charger whose barrel fits Pinecil's jack. Otherwise you end up having to pay extra for a GaN charger (if you don't have one) and USB-C to USB-C cables. USB-A to USB-C cables also work when you have a proper charger, but will provide a smaller wattage.

Awesome soldering iron for the price. I use mine with my 12 volt drill batteries for small jobs. Works great.
Here's the adapter I printed to make it work.

The old V1 hasn't been sold by the them for a long time now. They claim any V1 that might might find online for sell is a knockoff.

For someone who solders 1-2x per year (usually splicing cables) this has been great for me. Every other <$40 iron is some janky white labeled aliexpress product that's frustrating as hell to use. I was about to spend >$100 on a solid Hakko station, but it just doesn't make sense for the size, cost, and how infrequently I solder.

Grabbed their silicone USB-C cable as well, all works perfect with my 5-6 year old Anker 67W brick (one of their original GaN products).

The pinecil is a modern device, no need to rummage through the old pile. A USB-C Lenovo, HP, Dell laptop charger has enough power. Minimum 60watts, 18-20volts.

Thanks for the post OP, they been out of stock for a long while.

Is there a specific reason for someone to buy the short vs long tips? Having smaller hands I think I would like the short tips but just wondering what the use case for either short or long would be?

As a total noob, what all else is needed to actually solder electronics? Additional tips, flux, and flux sucker?
I bought one of these kits last year and have been surprised how functional and decent it is. It has everything you need to get started, and importantly it's cheap (~$10). The iron is better built than the accessories, thank goodness, and the solder, solder sucker, heat shrink -- everything does what it's supposed to do. I'm sure the temp settings dial is not super precise, but close enough for my purposes:

https://www.amazon.com/Soldering-...37&sr=1-10

For 'helping hands', I use pliers with rubber bands on the handles to give small components a gentle squeeze.

I figure start with something like this, get a feel for soldering low-stakes, and then see if there's anything you want to upgrade as you go.

'Helping hands', and a fan to put behind you, facing your back, blowing at your back so the fumes start by your hands and blow away from your body, the same direction you are looking. The fumes are bad. I Solder outside.

I wish this had no battery at all or pass-through. I just want to plug it into a portable USB power bank.

Short tips are v2 only which you are getting now.
The longer tips were for v1.

I would get shorter tips if you only plan on using this pinecil, but if you have other portable irons like a TS100 you can use long/regular tips as they are interchangeable.

There is no need to pay extra when a 19 V computer charger a few years old, barely older than Pinecil maybe, works great. Need I remind you, Pinecil accepts both barrel chargers and USB-C.

No, it hasn't been out of stock neither on the pine64 website nor on Amazon. In fact, for a few days you could have bought it for a few dollars less on Amazon. Now, I cannot claim I have checked their website daily, but I have done it with some periodicity and it was always available.

It has no battery. Also, regular USB power banks don't work, as it will not work with 5V input. You need a minimum of 9V for it to work at all (10-13 W), up to 24 V (72-92 W) per the manual.

They have different electrical resistance (ohms). The long tips are originally made for the TS100 and Pinecil V1 used them instead of designing their own. With the V2 they came out with short tips that allow more current and faster heatup.

V2 tips are slightly better. TS100/V1 tips are more widely available and individual replacements can be bought cheaply on places like Aliexpress. I only ever use 2 types of tips so it doesn't make sense to buy a whole set or replace a whole set when a tip gets too oxidized.
