Thanks for sharing and including all the links to the extras! You can use this 'in the field' with a PPS battery bank; however, I use this at a desk with a dedicated power supply and the silicone cord. I did initially spring for their solder pen holder, but then commissioned this one and it makes life easier https://thangs.com/designer/ZackF...%21-534477

I bought a pinecil along with a bunch of extras a year and a half ago, I already had a hakko, but I wanted something more convenient/travelable for quick jobs (guitar work, various electronics tasks like repairs, replacing batteries, etc.), and it is awesome! I haven't pulled out the Hakko since i got it. I also have the power supply on my work desk which I use daily, love this thing too, best desktop USB charger I have ever had, and I have gone through a lot of them. The V/A display is sweet. Here is what I picked up, along with a small pelican case to store everything in along with solder, etc. Yes the holder sucks, but for $2... it works. I have larger soldering stations w/ helping hands, etc. when needed, linked the main 2 I use below that are decent for the money. Also included links to a couple of good solder... don't cheap out on solder as is makes a huge difference to the ease of the job. Bigger gauge for stuff like guitars, smaller for small electronics:

Pinecil order:

PINECIL – Smart Mini Portable Soldering Iron 1 $25.99
USB TYPE-C TO USB TYPE-C SILICONE POWER CHARGING CABLE - 1 meter length 1 $3.49
USB TYPE-C TO USB TYPE-C SILICONE POWER CHARGING CABLE - 1.5 meter length 1 $3.99
PINECIL Portable Mini Stand 1 $1.99
PINECIL Replacement Tip Contacts 1 $1.00
PINECIL Soldering Tip Set (Fine) 1 $24.99
PINECIL Soldering Tip Set (Gross) 1 $24.99
PinePower - 120W Desktop Power Supply - US version 1 $37.99
PINECIL Break Out Board 1 $3.99

It's $38 after shipping vs $40 with prime shipping on Amazon from the same seller, although I'm not 100% sure the Amazon listing is for the v2. https://www.amazon.com/PINECIL-Sm...B096X6SG13

This thing is awesome, I've been stocking up on tips from AliExpress Choice sales lately. Need to get a power bank and USB-C setup currently just use a laptop barrel or usb charger in the house for it.

Those silicon cables are hella nice. They are soft and don't get tangled. I use them for everything, including my laptops. Capped at 60W. For $3-$4 its a steal.
I wish I had bought one with my pinecil.... But now I have a pinecil and I don't want to pay for shipping

I wouldn't trust Amazon to send a single legit item.
Perhaps I'm lucky but I have tens of thousands of Amazon orders including the likes of SD, microSD, ssd, ram and have never recieved a counterfeit item.
I have ordered some storage items from Amazon that are legitimate That have next to no heat and are very fast while ordering direct from the likes of Samsung (also wd./sd) has yielded also real but with the overheating issues and slower xfers.

The person was saying $38 plus not mentioned waiting weeks and maybe having import issue versus getting for $2 more from Amazon with buyers protection and quick delivery
At least that's what I get out of it.
When I was planning on ordering one of these a while back I was going to order 2 actually and a cord or two, a couple batches of tips and possibly the PS the. The shipping is much less per unit ordered
.... This post has reminded me I was going to get and will look about an order soon.

There is no need to pay extra when a 19 V computer charger a few years old, barely older than Pinecil maybe, works great. Need I remind you, Pinecil accepts both barrel chargers and USB-C.

No, it hasn't been out of stock neither on the pine64 website nor on Amazon. In fact, for a few days you could have bought it for a few dollars less on Amazon. Now, I cannot claim I have checked their website daily, but I have done it with some periodicity and it was always available.
I never suggested buying a USB C charger. It's a poor suggestion telling people to rummage through their old pile when anyone who has a laptop within the last 4 years has a USB-C charger they can use. That's one of the awesome features of these soldering iron, it works with 60watt USB C laptop chargers.

Can this be powered off the USB C port on a laptop?
No, but you can use your laptop's USB C charger instead. It needs minimum 60 watts for power

My likely use case for a soldering is mechanical-keyboard assembly and audio cable repair. I assume something like the Pinecil would be sufficient for that?

Similar here - seems like it'd be a good fit but waiting on the pros in this thread

What is the most versatile short tip set to get with the pinecil? Fine set or gross?

The best tip I found is this one, the BC-2 tip
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...=UTF8&th=1

Its a small chisel. I use it all the time,

I use the KU knife tip 90% of the time. Very versatile since you can use the flat side for more contact or the pointed tip for reaching individual pins on chips. The only other tips I use maybe 5% of the time are a fat chisel tip for big components requiring a lot of heat (soldering 8 or 10 gauge thick wire to XT90 connectors), or needle tip for very fine microsoldering.

I think buying a full set and swapping tips frequently is a waste of time and money.

~~Never done any shopping on aliexpress, what are these "choice sales" you speak of?~~
Ah I see the yellow "Choice" icon, not sure what that indicates exactly.

And what is a good price for a tip on that platform, in your experience/opinion?
I am seeing that you can get them as low as $3.88 (free ship), vs pine's listing for $6 (paid ship) each
Yeah I paid 3.59 for the last one, I buy a fair amount of random LEDs and other small stuff that I can wait a couple weeks for so I hit the "choice" pick 3 (maximum like 10) sales a lot, most of the items in those sales are priced closer to what "old school" china direct pricing was like (ali's prices on most items day to day are no longer as insanely cheap as they used to be making the wait a lot less palateable) and just stock up on odds and ends electronics etc I've needed to buy. As others mentioned I bought the chisel and knife style tips so far as they seem to universally be regarded as the most useful for most tasks. I'll probably pick up a very fine tip at some point as well.

If you go to the main aliexpress page (assuming they're running a sale) it's under "choose X items for X.XX price" unfortunately it's like a promoted search so you have to just scroll through until you find them, if you browse around that item a lot it will tend to show up higher in the sale results if they're running them in the sale though. Typically they list them as TS100 tips but they work fine in a Pinecil.
