Our take: Reviewer Fc-Construct found the Elex to be a meaningful upgrade from the Sennheiser HD 600, offering a crisp treble forwardness and air with greater clarity and openness. Always wanted to try these. I have the Elegia which I like, even though I've barely touched them since I got the Hifiman Edition XS.
I too have the elegia but am scared to use them due to the headband issue. I think the expression "garage queen" applies. They only come out on occasion.

That's what I was going to say. How much better are those from Sennheiser's? I have a HD650 since 2017 that I paid 300 for it and never had a single issue with it. So how much better are those to even consider, when there are so many issues with it and for more? Sorry for my lack of experience with headphones

Same here, have 6xx for jazz/piano/vocal and argon mk2 for pop and edm. Not sure how much upgrades this headphone is to deal with all the qc headache.

Excellent sounding headphones with a few quality issues. My right driver stopped producing sound after a few years. They were working on day, I went on paternity leave and didn't listen to them for 2 months, and when I came back to them only one side played. Shame. A fix from Focal costs more than this deal.

I have a headband protector for my Bathys for whatever it's worth. IMO this should help alleviate some of the headband breaking concerns with Focals. Won't break the bank either at around $10 on Amazon.

i have 2 focals (these elex and elegia) and have had zero issues.

i've owned many headphones from sennheisier, hifiman, fostex, audeze, zmf.... these are my favorite in terms of sound, comfort, and build. elex is endgame for me, which is crazy considering i paid $350 open box from headphones.com.
I'm the same way without the fostex and zmf, but the driver issue is very well documented and seems to be inherent to the design which Focal doesn't seem to mind. Most of their headphones sound good enough but not to overcome that issue at their price (unless they make a new Bathys that has features found in competitors at a fraction of their price)

Many people regard the more expensive Focal Clear as basically a better HD600, but I didn't think it was a significant price to buy when there are other clearly different headphones that have other benefits if you like the tonality of the 600 lineup. I've had the original hd580 and a hd650 since nearly its launch and there isn't a better value proposition on the market than the HD6XX except maybe the 58XJ, and even the regular price 600/650 are an astounding value and have held up over time. If you've never replaced your ear pads you should consider them a maintenance item and they do change the tonal balance a little as them compress over time, but even those are cheaper with the Sennheiser and don't wear out instantly.

I demo'ed the lineup of Focal headphones at our local store, and found that the signature Focal sound has a hole in the upper mid range. Only the Utopias sounded "correct" to me, while the Stellia's were also great sounding, especially for closed back. The Celestees and the Clear Mg didn't feel tonally correct and the soundstage was a bit more narrow than I'd like.

Comparing to other brands such as HiFiMan and Sennheisers, I'd say that Focal has the clarity and resolution with a more intimate soundstage. HFM has tonal and depth advantage going for them, but lacking in resolution. Sennheiser's, depending on which one, has the soundstage advantage but may be lacking in depth.

I have the HFM Ananda V1, HFM HE400i, Sennheiser HD 700, Sennheiser HD 598, and the Focal Bathys in my collection. I find myself reaching for the Ananda's more than anything else. All are driven with a Schiit Lyr 3 w/ the holy grail TSRP tube.

However I think for $399, it's worth a shot in the dark to try these out.

Any tips on how to listen for "holes" in the ranges? Like how to tell if something feel tonally correct or narrow?

Thanks in advance!
