After using eBay for nearly 25 years (account registered on March 11, 1999), this experience has genuinely made me reluctant to continue.
I don't know what their end goal was, but they've left me feeling crummy about their company (and crummy in general).

Not to mention they also charge store subscriptions or insertion fees, optional listing upgrades like setting a reserve ($5 even if it doesn't sell or 7.5% when it does, whichever is higher; incl fees for listings which use bold, subtitles, or are in multiple categories), advertising revenue, 'Classified Ad' fee of $9.95 for 30-day listing, a $20 dispute fee, and final value fees for not meeting their "performance expectations".
This doesn't include Real Estate or cars, as those have different price structures which can be more or less. Hell, there are a number of companies whose entire business consists of earning fees from just one of those streams of income (advertising remains > 3/4 of revenue for Google). They also treat sellers like crap, and one of their executives is in prison for harassing a couple [npr.org] whose blog and newsletter criticized ebay.
