Sits just above a much more expensive 3070ti. It's a good buy at this price I think but GPU prices are fluctuating right now due to the release of Nvidia SUPER cards and stuff like the 7900 GRE. You may want to wait a month or two to see if it goes any lower
40-50W less for the 7700 XT. Say you pay $0.15 per kWh, you'd save 1kWh every 20 or so hours spent gaming. Remember that the higher power consumption is mostly applicable to gaming and not just idle/productivity use. So to save $40 you'd need to use it for something like 5000 hours. If you really use it heavily, that might actually pay off, but for me that math just doesn't work.

I know it is a ways off but if you can wait till 4th quarter the 8700 XT will be out for $20 more at 40%+ more performance.

Sadly depends on where you life. In Northern California we get gouged by PG&E where incremental power usage above baseline is charged as high as 62 cents per kilowatt hour at peak times. That's 4x higher than the price per kilowatt hour you quoted.
You get gouged by your politicians polices...

Yes, specifically CPUC's continued acquiescence to allowing PG&E and other public utilities to raise their rates. The burden of wildfires and upgrading aging infrastructure is also falling on the consumer.

However if you're out of state (sounds like it) and referring to California's green energy policies because some right-wing media told that was the cause, well, then you really don't understand our state. Most of the energy charges are not in power generation (which is not unusually high) but in power delivery. In fact the cost of power generation is actually lower for 100% renewable power and continues to drop as utilities renegotiate long-term contracts.

And how much of the power delivery is from out of state because your wise leaders are shutting down fossil fuel generation prematurely. Here's some right wing for you.

Texas trumps all as the best state for renewable energy

Sources measured included wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, wood and wood-derived materials and other biomass – the six categories designated as renewable by the EIA. A megawatt is one million watts of power.

Top 10 Renewable States
State Megawatt hours
Texas 6,502,749
Washington 6,231,765
California 5,169,859

I'm not really sure what point you're making. California imports about 1/3rd of its electricity, and in terms of energy imports it doesn't skew towards fossil fuels or renewables ... the import mix is very similar to the overall mix.

That's great Texas generates so much power, I guess, especially renewables. I could equally remind you though that California is home to Apple, Google, Nvidia, Meta, Chase, Visa, and practically half the most valuable companies in the world. Texas is known for its energy industry. That's not among the things California is known for.

Cool story. Actually for 2024 both companies to join the S&P 500, Deckers and Super Micro Computer Inc, are headquartered in California. That means the most notable recent success stories are here, adding to the long list of blockbuster companies to come out of California.

You may have also heard of a little known company called Nvidia headquartered in Santa Clara California which this year just broke $2 trillion in value. Do you have any idea how many billionaires get minted when a company increases in value by $1 trillion over the course of just six months? Hint: 1 trillion is a thousand billion.

So you can listen to Fox News telling you our economy is in shambles but we'll just keep defining the future just like we did with Apple, Google, etc. Frankly sometimes I wish the billionaires would leave sometimes. Do you have any idea how expensive real estate gets with so many billionaires around?

I'm sure ur equally proud of the ever growing homeless tent communities around SF and LA.

For every new billionaire that gets minted in silicon valley, 5 new tent communities pop up to celebrate their success.

Yup, homelessness is a big problem .. growing nationwide, by the way ... but especially in California. At it's root is probably the rise of drugs like fentanyl, the crushing rise of housing costs, and lack of mental healthcare. Like I said, sometimes I wish the billionaires *would* go away. Because it'd reduce the crushing cost of housing here. But if you think California is full of tent cities you also need to go touch grass.

I bought this back in november and used it to make a 1440p build for my nephew as a christmas present. It is a really good card for the price. It is long though so check your case size.

This is a great card for both 1080p and 1440p. Gets you 16gb vram and draws around 200W. At this price nothing compares with it. I also own this card.

If the 77 uses a fraction less electricity, that'll more than make up for $40 difference in the long run.

But I don't know, does it use less electricity?

Id rather have 16gb vram

Going from an RX 580 to this! Quadruple the vRAM! It's gonna kick butt!... I hope, haha. I'm not that tech savvy.

This card is miles ahead of the 7600 XT 16GB for only $50 more, it's a steal. the 16GB should be great for AI and keep the card relevant for at least 5 more years. The only reason to buy the 7000-series card is if you require AV1 encoding or you think that AMD's DLSS is crucial (Yes they are working on an AI-based upscaling tech that will need the 7000-series AI accelerator).

6800 is the #1 AMD fps/watt/$$ card of the 6000 generation, incredibly underrated, it's a great card. If you are not buying this then I'd get a 7800xt but it will cost $110 more (about 30% more) and will only be 20% faster. I wanted to get this 2Y ago but was confused by winning the newegg lottery and got a 3070 Ti instead - I wish I had a 6800 instead !!
