I'm going to get downvoted by people who can't afford the Quest 3 and want to cope but I wanted to give some helpful advice.

I own both the quest 2 and the quest 3, and wanted to give some insight into people who are on the fence.

The Quest 3, while being $499, is a SIGNIFICANT upgrade over the Quest 2.

-The quest 3 has a huge resolution bump over the quest 2. Honestly the quest 2 is pretty blurry and feels like a budget headset. There's significant screen door effect (you can see the pixels and looks like you are staring through a screen door while the quest 3 eliminates this problem). Not only this but the new lenses makes the image sharp all the way through while the quest 2 feels blurry depending on where you look.

-The quest 3 is much more comfortable to wear because of better weight distribution. This is huge when you plan to play for more than 20-30 minutes because the two gives a lot of fatigue because of the weird weight distribution.

-The 3 uses a new set of lenses called pancake lenses which greatly increase the field of view from 95 degrees to 110 degrees. This makes it much more immersive and life like. In the quest 2, you can very easily see the edges of the image which is immersion breaking.

-The quest 3 has more accurate tracking and allows you to use mixed reality/augmented reality because of the pass through cameras in the front. The quest 2 does not allow this. This is very important when you want to be able to see your surroundings without having to take your headset off. It also makes the head set more future proof.

-I used the mixed reality on my quest 3 to learn piano. The piano notes came
Down like in guitar hero on my
Own piano in real time. It was an amazing feature that greatly expanded the capabilities past just gaming.

Honestly, unless you are an extreme casual, I would pass on the quest 2 even at this price. If you just plan to vary occasionally use it then go for it but otherwise, I would say that the quest 3 is definitely worth the money and this is coming from someone who loves to save money. To be honest, it's pretty surprising just how much Meta upgraded the headset over their previous iteration. It feels like a next gen product now and is by far the best value on the market. The Quest 2 never made me feel that way even when it was new.
I've had my quest 2 since 2021, paid $250, and used it maybe 10 times total. For what I paid, I'm not so bothered.

I love the idea of VR, but in practice, it's just a neat toy that's cumbersome to use and gets boring quick. This is my opinion though, and I understand fully, that some folks live and die by VR, but these people are the exception, not the rule. I have five or six friends that also have VR headsets (mostly quest 2), and only one of them use it consistently.

I understand the quest 3 is fairly more advanced but doubt it would lead me to using it any extra, I if I paid double, I'd be very disappointed.
Meta Quest 3 is $499.99 😒

Have they even made an exclusive MQ3 game yet? Last time I checked, the Q2 could handle all of them.
Just because it runs the games doesn't mean it's the same experience. Everything from the lenses to the processor is better.

in general I agree with you, plus the thing gives me a headache, but I think if the quest had more AAA titles it would be a better option, such as halflife alyx or the vr fnaf game.

Ah, makes sense. Like if switch had same games as ps5 and playing like borderlands 3 on switch vs ps5. I'll make sure and not try the new one, and continue to slum it in my ignorance 😉

They should come out with some exclusives though. Seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot by competing with themselves.

Check out Facebook marketplace, Nextdoor, OfferUp… there are 20 around me right now for $100 or so. Families are offloading these left and right.

I bought one for golf+ and walkabout. Life happens and the dream of a golf sim is delayed a year or two. Any other recommendations or are you able to demo before buying full games?

We just gotta wait for the rumored Meta Quest 3 Lite and Quest 3 Pro. Then meta will have good pricing

Pretty all of what I came on here to say in this post. Good summary!

VR/AR really appealed to my imagination, but the actual experience is not the expansive immersive one I expected, but instead I find it to be fidgety and uncomfortable. If I got headaches from it, forget about it. I'm constantly adjusting the headset for comfort and light leak, fumbling with the controllers to figure out which buttons my fingers are on and the low resolution of the MQ2 makes me feel like I'm back in college playing Carmageddon 2 on my Gateway 2000 PC. It somehow feels dated and narrow instead of cutting edge, expansive and endless. That's just my opinion 🤷🏻 ♂️
