M1 is fine for what a lot of us need ,
When it comes to Mac computers in general you have to think in the long term. Most people will use a Mac for almost 10 years sometimes. I used my 2014 MacBook Air until last year. The reason it worked well for so long was because I made sure I thought in the long term when purchasing.
m1 vs m2 might be not too big now in 2024, but 6 years down the line m2 will be noticeably faster than m1.
and I can't imagine m1 vs m3 which 6 year later would be night and day

now m1 vs m2 vs m3 is all the same. but 6 years down the line m1 vs m2 will be noticeably faster.

But Apple is marketing to John Smith who watches youtube, uses Microsoft office, creates some iMovies and slideshows from their iPhone. The base model computers are way more than enough for the majority of their customers. People that are in the Mac ecosystem and like their technology are also people with the cash to pay for the higher end models which is also fine. And resale value is much much higher than PC which is almost nothing. I'm a PC and android fanboy but I understand the economy of Apple.
And in most cases John Smith is ALSO not getting ripped off by spending $500 instead of $200 or 300 because of the added benefit of less computer maintenance, not worrying about bloatware spyware malware (in general). Windows you should wipe and reinstall every few years to stay fastest. Apple is just easier. Do you really want to be tech support for Uncle John and Grandma for windows compared to Apple where you teach them how it works but you won't be maintaining it as much.
