I'm struggling to find a reason why anyone would buy a 500GB 5400 RPM 3.5in HDD in 2024. Is there some special use case for these that I don't know about?

if all you want is a cheap NAS RAID for like the backing up of important docs and pics, this would do just fine.

You could raid 0 two of these drives & get 270-300 mbs a second. Not as good as an SSD but until 1tb SSDs get back down to $35 again, it could be a stopgap, especially if you are into video editing or gaming…

Given the current prices of HDDs that are like $7-$9 per TB, this drive may not make any sense. However, still useful for home lab or DIY JBODs

Well, your analogy really doesn't make sense. If you really had an old computer (analogous to a 1955 Chevy Bel Aire), you would be using an IDE (or older) interface, not SATA.

If you're using SATA anyway, the size, speed and capacity of this drive just doesn't make much sense. You can get a Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM drive for $27 (per PC Part Picker). If this were a 2.5in drive, I could see a use for an old laptop even. But at 3.5in, it's difficult.

Maybe they're running an OS that doesn't recognize drives higher than 2 TB but still want to create a raid array? I mean it's cheap so what the heck

Very few use cases. HDDs are preferred over SSDs for CCTV because of the constant writes. Some can use it as a very cheap backup drive laying around, etc.

Agreed but then the cost per TB comes into play. Having a 500gb drive on anything but the most antique DVR is going to yield low retention. Especially when this is the equivalent of $30 TB and the going rate is much lower than that.

If this was a 2.5" hdd, I would get it since I have some USB enclosures and would use this for camera recording storage. Agree that 3.5" isn't very useful considering the amount of energy it's pulling and that you would need a big desktop or big USB enclosure to power it.
