1. It's not -vastly- slower at all. 16% slower. Passmark actually rates 5900x higher than 13600k for a number of reasons, some of which are below.
2. Wouldn't make a difference either gaming or working unless you are an edge professional, in which case cost doesn't really factor. Also, those who are considering the 5900x probably already have the AM4 platform so there's a huge cost jump to go to a different platform.
3. 13th gen is much hotter and 14th gen is so hot that only AIOs can keep them from throttling even during regular use. Do a google search for "intel throttling raptor lake". In comparison, the 5900x stays at such low temps that you will hardly ever hear the fans even while gaming. TDP for 5900x is 105w vs 125w.
4. 64mb cache on 5900x vs 32mb cache

None of this is fanboyism, it's just the facts. I have a 13600k system and I like it, but only because it was built on the company dime. at home i have a 5900x and 4080S, and it is a great thing to be playing maxed out with RT etc and the desktop stays cool and quiet.

No, only am5 boards will support ddr5, meaning you'll need a 7000 series cpu.

I think I'm going to pick one of these up to replace a Ryzen 7 1800x --- anyone able to weigh in on whether I should expect the cooling to carry over? Fitment wise and whatnot? Chips should be dimensionally the same, yes?

Yes, it will fit. Make sure it's adequate for the 2900x, though.

Same AM4 socket , so it will fit. best to check your mobo to see if it supports 5900x. if it does, will likely require a bios update using your old/current cpu. But since you have a 1000 series cpu, the chipset at that time arent likely to support 5900x. but you never know. chances are even less likely if you have a HP computer. some of those boards only goes up to 2700.

Does anybody know what specifically makes this worse for gaming than the 5800X3D? On paper, it seems better in every way than that CPU except for the L3 Cache.

https://www.cpubenchmark.net/comp...-7-5800X3D

Sorry for asking the question if I just answered it (L3 cache). This thread's getting me "shopping" on how to upgrade my rig w/out having to replace the whole thing. I always just thought that single-core performance was what determined gaming capability. Stupid fun Helldivers 2....

My 5900X runs very cool.
Just surfing now for past 2 hrs I'm at 35-36c.
When gaming I get into the 40s - some low 50s in summer
I use a Mugan 5 cooler with a6600XT Nitro.
I never ever hear fans.
Just make sure to coat the whole cpu surface with thermal paste (instead of the rice grain or X"
