CPU is really Zen 3 I think, so this is like a 5300u from a couple generations ago. For basic tasks, it's fine, but not sure if it's worth $400.

It's Zen 2, so I would definitely steer away from this.

Okay laptop for a student.

Zen 2, but made more efficient by newer ways of making cpus. iGPU is junk. Not even Vega.

These were sub-$300 ($289 IIRC) straight from Acer as "refurbs"... a while ago, but mine was mint.

I would go with the Dell at the same price at Costco. Dell has a much better build quality, very similar specs, and the Intel processor is more current (2023) than this Ryzen (2022). However, the AMD does have DDR5. These are just a good everyday workhorse computer... it's not for heavy gaming. Dell is also a US company vs Acer is Taiwanese (but all the parts are made in Asia, except for the Intel CPU made in USA or Europe; AMD CPU likely made in Taiwan).

7x20 is Zen 2 on TSMC 6nm. All the 7000 series have garbage iGPU in them. This is basically a 4 core, 8 thread AMD 4000 mobile series with a gimped GPU made only be used for internet/excel. Chips like these are basically Intel 10th gen in performance/generation.

7x30 is Zen 3 on TSMC 7nm. This is all cool except it is identical to the AMD 5000/6000 series. These chips can play some light online multiplayer games like Dota, LoL if you are okay with lower settings. These are similar to Intel 12th gen.

7x40 is Zen 4 on TSMC 4nm. THis is the true AMD current gen. Special call out if the 7840U or better; those have massively powerful 780m GPU in them, equivalent to a 1050 Ti. 7540U is not that much of an upgrade over Zen 3 as AMD has gimped the 740m with 1/3 of the cores of a full fat 780m. These are similar/better than Intel 13th gen.

Any of them got a decent display, like at least 300 nits brightness?

You really need to go to the store and look at them and try them out. I'd say 90% don't meet my criteria to buy there: washed out screens, dim displays, keyboards that have litle key travel or are just not great to type on.

FWIW, if you're looking for a $400 laptop, I'd definitely look at this deal:
https://slickdeals.net/f/17336271-asus-vivobook-15-15-6-fhd-ips-ryzen-5-5600h-16gb-ddr4-512gb-ssd-39...
While it does depend on your use case and desire for all day battery power, the Asus rocks a much more powerful chip that'll play games respectably at low quality settings. The 250nit display with low color resolution (it might also be a TN display - which makes it hard to swallow) ... it definitely won't wow you. But it's a $400 laptop, the OLED version is available for those who are thus inclined :-)

iGPU is RDNA2, but just 2 Compute Engines. This is the same architecture used in Steamdesk.

Sorry. Good correction. Point remains - old tech and a new name.

Clear crisp and concise except that the latest "fresh" out of the oven in 2024 is the mobile 8000 series which is 7x40 beefed up with a NPU for AI and better video editing engine. It is now available in Asus Zephyrus G14 and an Acer Swift.

Zen 2 CPU. That is like 3 generations old. I think you can get something better.
