For the uninformed. I work in IT in healthcare. The test are not going to stop you from getting COVID, they will let you know you have COVID. What you choose to do with this information is up to you and, let's face it, your employer. For us it means working from home for at least the day (for a non-positive result) or working from home for at least the week (for a positive result). We care about our coworkers and have the ability to protect them from getting sick. Which in turn protects them from spreading it to their families and patients.
We are lucky enough to have an employeer that cares about spreading disease and are lucky enough to have the ability to work from home. One of my coworkers is currently working from home because he is sick and I appreciate him for it.

I've been on SD for ages and I never get why people feel the need to argue about stuff like this. If you don't want the test, think it's stupid, whatever, don't sign up for it then. If you want it, great, get it.

tl;dr - chill out with the fighting

If you have a certain Kaiser plan, they give you home test for free. Its 4 boxes of 2pk max a month per person.

I remember when the Omnicron variant was at its highest. You could not find a test kit. People were buying them for inflated prices. After the variant slowed, the government announced free test for everybody. Nice. Now that the virus is nothing more than a flu and there's a treatment for it, of course, the government offers free tests again. Talk about a day late and a dollar short. Don't expect the government to do anything effectively or efficiently.

My take is just order as many as you can and bundle them for sale on eBay. The tax dollars have been wasted already, so you might as well try make some of your taxed money back.
Omicron was first discovered in Nov 2021 and became dominant in 2022. I counted a total of 8 "deals" on free COVID kit for 2022, the highest number of any year. I never saw any shortage of free testing kit when Omicron was around. When I needed the free kit, I was always able to get them. On the other hand there were only two listings in 2023 even though XBB was the thing for last year. This year JN.1 is taking over. I'm just one month it accounted for nearly 90% of all cases. JN.1 can spread more easily and can evade immunity better. These free kits always seem to coincide with the timing of a new strain becoming dominant. So in fairness I think the government is doing a pretty decent job.

if you can't get why people need to argue that's a big problem right here. these tests are not free, we are taxed on every single thing and it's for what? THIS? I thought USPS was constantly losing money and I thought their purpose was to deliver mail, not to be a front for pushing medical stuff around.

Either way, there is a lot to argue about here. These tests are simply not "free" and someone is footing the bill. That right there is plenty to argue about.
Well the billionaires sure are not footing the bill. They don't pay any taxes.

Yes, I am in the same boat as you and I just placed an order and it came back to say I will get four tests in the mail, not eight.
Weird, I tried yesterday and could not order any saying I reached max order limit whereas I only ordered 4.

I wish all employers bothered to keep sick people at home.

Sadly, most people risk losing employment if they don't come in while sick.

Dunno why this is being posted today. I'm pretty sure they haven't added any tests to allowances in months. I just tried and it said I've reached my limit, and I haven't ordered any in a while.
To remind people that the program is about to end. I, for one, appreciate the reminder (even though I've already reached the limit). As an asthmatic who has had COVID twice, I also appreciate those who care enough to test and self-isolate.

My first bout was presumptive because no COVID tests were available yet. But 2 months of diarrhea and 3 months of O2% around 92% were pretty convincing. New York City has just begun its lockdown and COVID had not yet traversed across America. I was stupid enough to instinctively shake the hand of a homeless person who claimed to recognize me. The streets were abandoned except for him and me. Then I undoubtedly touched my face. And the symptoms began just days after.

Second bout occurred on New Year Day after a family gathering where many of us got sick. The sad irony was that it occurred 3 weeks after we got vaccinated. Ironic because 3 weeks is when the immune response is supposed to be strongest. At the time, it was still thought that the vaccine prevents infections so we let our guards down at the gathering. Instead of sipping cocktails on New Year's Day, I was doing a drug cocktail of around 8 pills. That Paxlovid left a nasty taste 24/7.

Then there was the time my grandparents mistakened my bottle of lube (☺️!) for hand sanitizer, which they took to the senior center. Ah, so many fond COVID memories!

Actually the test could help stop a family member from spreading COVID to you.
Not free! Taxpayers are paying for it.

I'm guessing that the supply of tests are starting to get closer to the expiration date and this is why they are sending out so many at a time. It started out with two free ones, then four, now eight!
It was always 8

Yes you are partially footing the bill for these and for that I thank you. I ordered eight more 😂

They had to put limits on how many anyone could get because they keep running out of them....
