For the uninformed. I work in IT in healthcare. The test are not going to stop you from getting COVID, they will let you know you have COVID. What you choose to do with this information is up to you and, let's face it, your employer. For us it means working from home for at least the day (for a non-positive result) or working from home for at least the week (for a positive result). We care about our coworkers and have the ability to protect them from getting sick. Which in turn protects them from spreading it to their families and patients.
We are lucky enough to have an employeer that cares about spreading disease and are lucky enough to have the ability to work from home. One of my coworkers is currently working from home because he is sick and I appreciate him for it.

I've been on SD for ages and I never get why people feel the need to argue about stuff like this. If you don't want the test, think it's stupid, whatever, don't sign up for it then. If you want it, great, get it.

tl;dr - chill out with the fighting

If you have a certain Kaiser plan, they give you home test for free. Its 4 boxes of 2pk max a month per person.

I am hiding mine in the back of my closet so my wife doesn'tthrow them out when they expire. In 20 years they will be collector items...a rememberence of a bygone Era. πŸ˜‰

Considering most people ignore the CDC guidance and dont mask up when positive, the 8 tests are great if you still require proof before entry.
well use our own guidance. CDC isn't needed

After learning facts organized in Invisible Rainbow, "free" is not worth the trouble of participation. Voted bad product for misleading undue influence.

Omicron was first discovered in Nov 2021 and became dominant in 2022. I counted a total of 8 "deals" on free COVID kit for 2022, the highest number of any year. I never saw any shortage of free testing kit when Omicron was around. When I needed the free kit, I was always able to get them. On the other hand there were only two listings in 2023 even though XBB was the thing for last year. This year JN.1 is taking over. I'm just one month it accounted for nearly 90% of all cases. JN.1 can spread more easily and can evade immunity better. These free kits always seem to coincide with the timing of a new strain becoming dominant. So in fairness I think the government is doing a pretty decent job.
I caught omnicron in August of 2022. It kicked my a$$. I vividly remember people asking for test kits on Nextdoor. I also remember CVS, Walmart, Walgreens, etc were all out of stock. People who had the tests were selling them for a profit, no surprise. The government offered the free tests AFTER the wave as over. They were criticized for the delay. I remember that vividly as well. Don't try to rewrite history. A simple Google search will show results of articles written about the shortages. I tried to post a link, but it was taken down.

Are these expired tests where the expiration date has been extended? When my son had Covid I tested him with one of those free ones that had been expired but the date had been extended and it showed he was negative. I didn't trust that so I went and bought a newer one that hadn't been expired and that one showed he was positive.

I'm not rewriting history. 6 of the 8 deals from SD I mentioned were from the first four months of 2022. My parents and I claimed a few as we lived different states. We had the expired one box from Siemens from previous year, and CVS was selling them. CVS was kind enough to let us swap for the newer ones even though we didn't purchase it. This was in NYC. I remember vividly that I went out with friends eating at Applebee's in the summer, and we all got sick. I passed it to my mom. I was pretty sure it was COVID because it couldn't have been cold during the summer. The kit tested negative so I thought it must be wrong. My bones actually hurt and I could barely get out of bed. My mom was so miserable that she went to the doctor, she tested negative again with the nurse administering the PCR. We used up a lot of test that year. I'm not disputing there was a shortage, but I got the free kit early 2022 without an issue. If you have a big outbreak, no amount of supply would be enough. Just like one year when people were hoarding toilet papers and all of the sudden there was a shortage of it. The year China decided to drop it's quarantine policy, there was a shortage of Ibuprofen in China and the price skyrocketed. We're talking about the country making majority of world's drugs running short because of panic. You could make a lot of money if you can ship ibuprofen to China that year. I told my buddy who loves conspiracy theory, and they were stocking up acetaminophen and ibuprofen. I knew it was going to be a knee jerk reaction but it wasn't causing any harm. My point is if you're prepared you would be just fine, and government gave us plenty of opportunity to stock up beginning of 2022 as SD proved. What happened later on couldn't be helped. If everyone starts hoarding tissue paper, there wouldn't be enough in this country.

There are already tons of people saying all these free kits are wasteful spending from the government. It would have been even more wasteful if government overstocks every year in preparation for the unexpected outbreak that never happens. It is very hard for the scientists to predict what Omicron would have done. Once again we have JN.1 taking over and becoming the most dominant COVID in just two months. So what should the government do? Overstock testing kits in preparation for 2022-ish year?

Hence why I'm saying lets spend it on it, you know something worthwhile like taking lives instead of preventing deaths (we got one hater*)
