I would save your miles for long haul international flights because they have exploded in price, making awards on those flights much more valuable.

Too bad they do not have a better system in place vs randomly trying city to city on various days.

Hate to sound ungrateful, and obviously there are deals out there to be had - but, it's just not worth the effort of trying to shuffle through all of this to hope you stumble on to something.

Not true.... I am not the biggest fan of AA miles but they do not expire within a year...

From their FAQ:
Just earn or redeem miles on American or with an AAdvantage® partner at least once every 24 months. We'll automatically extend your mileage expiration date 24 months from the date of your most recent qualifying activity.

So as long as you are flying, or if you are earning miles (i assume with a AA card as well that you buy some snacks at the store with once every year or two would work)

If you can find a flight between your two cities it's a really good deal. Widespread availability.

They're just on a dynamic scal. You can get really good deals as long as you're patient and wait and look in advance or don't travel during popular times like midsummer or December. If you do travel on popular times you're going to have to book it through a partner with aa miles If there's any availability such as JAL. I got a SFO to MNL all business class for 70k on Jal for this December. Last year in December I got 70K from SLC to TPE all FC and Business.

It's hard to believe but I found some very nice deals here. Usually can't find flights available on these cheap deals.

DFW to CUN:
Miles: 5k + $47 fee
vs
Cash: $266 (via google flights).

So it's about 4.38 cents per mile which is pretty good deal imo. For me, I'd rather burn statement credit from CC (like Amex Aspire, etc) than use mile for a short 2-hr flight.

Yep 2k to Japan or 70k miles. But you still have to price it out at about 1.5-1.7c a mile. 10k for a trip is nice.

I had pretty much given up on my AA miles. They've screwed up the program so bad. I have about 50k miles, but I can never figure out how to get a decent deal on them. Maybe I'll get lucky -- no reason to hold miles these days, they hold their value as well as the Argentinean peso.

They're terrible compared to yesteryear, but can still save you money. Used 7k for a flight that was two days away — would have been $450 one way. This was a month ago after six years without redeeming a mile lol.

AA miles are among the most valuable because they're not easy to earn and the lack of transfer partners.
This is a fantastic promotion, most people won't be able to participate, but you can book ten tickets with your 50K miles Smilie
Good luck
