is this a good price for the specs? does anyone have this to comment on it?
i do like that unlike the previous Vivobook 16 best buy deal that was posted, the USB-C has displayport + power delivery. also has 1TB SSD.
so for an extra $200 you get a better processor, 1TB SSD vs 512GB, extra 4GB memory, and USB-C display port + power delivery.
logically seems like a good value

For the specs, it's pretty good. Heck, the 7840HS, or even 7840U, would be a good price for what most people would use this laptop for. And the integrated graphics (780M) is very good, allowing g you to play most games at 1080p, although with medium to low settings for more recent games to be playable at the low end (there are a lot of benchmark YouTube videos that cover this iGPU).
The main thing that is a negative for me is the soldered ram. The 780M runs best with dual channel memory. And the faster the system ram, the better the graphics performance since the iGPU borrows that memory (optimal size is about 4-6GB for graphics from the reviews I've seen that wondered what the best allocation would be). Specs for this laptop memory say it's 4800mhz, so if you put in a second memory stick, you're stuck at 4800mhz max, and anything else than an identical spec memory module would likely mean trading more ram but losing dual channel.
So as a productivity work station or home-use, it's probably fantastic. If you plan on doing gaming past older games, or games with low graphics demands, it might be better to look elsewhere as you could get more for your gaming dollar.
This is what I generally do not understand with AMD laptops esp the ones sold at retailers.
The biggest drawback of Ryzen 6xxx and Ryzen 7xxxx [f***d up naming convention that is 1cm better the Athlon XP or Intel PR] days was that they only work with DDR5 memory and no DDR4 compatibility. But they also had better feature set compared to 5xxx
Support for USB4 40GBps with unofficial TB3 with 6xxx
Support for USB4 40GBps with official TB3/unoffical TB4 with the correct 7x4x
So how come this laptop with 7940HS on Zen4 based core, DDR5 and somewhat on the higher end not even ship with 1 USB4 port and instead with only 3.2 which has been there since the 3xxx Ryzen series?

Solid for the price, not exceptional as the going rate is $600-700 for a OLED + Aluminum 7840U laptop (Zenbook 14X, Pavillion Plus 14).
There isn't a huge uplift from 7840U to 7940HS. You get a higher TDP maybe just maybe depending on the laptop config. So unless you are trying to use this a desktop replacement and want to maximize every ounce of compute power, then this is worth it for the said purpose. For every day use as a laptop, there is not going to be a difference here between 7940HS and 7840U. The 7940HS is better off as a desktop chip (sold as one) for those mini PCs where the TDP can be configured to go up to 54 Watts.

Depends on your needs.
This is a nice deal for a Ryzen 9 machine with 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD.
If you want / need something with a fair amount of additional graphics processing power and want / need a better screen, a 40% larger battery and Thunderbolt 4, then for ~$180 - $220 more you can get a like new Open Box Excellent Asus Creator i9.
The Creator comes with an Intel i9-13900H CPU, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Nvidia RTX 3050 GPU and an OLED 2.8K display with 100% DCI-P3 color gamut.
Some of the benefits of the Creator over this particular Vivobook:
That said, if your budget is $600 or under and / or you do not need more graphics power and can live with a smaller battery, the lower resolution of an FHD panel along with less maximum brightness, then this Vivobook is a lot of bang for your buck, especially with a great CPU like the Ryzen 9 7940HS!
Does anyone know what best buy return policy is regarding the restocking fee? I received the other vivobook with the 5800HS yesterday and already opened it. Will I be a restocking fee if I return it to get this one. I kind of want the USB-C power delivery that this one offers.

What's the issue pairing a higher sized RAM module of the same frequency with the 8GB soldered on one? e.g. a 32GB 4800MHz + 8 GB soldered 4800MHz
It won't run dual channel, so it'll reduce the total memory throughput...
I know RAM speed is important for integrated graphics, so I'm not really sure what the implications of that would be. Of course, the 4800MHz is slow anyways.

I'm pretty sure you can put in a 32gb stick to get it up to 40.
