you can definitely paint over this with no trouble at all. This is stainable as the packaging says, however, you'll wish you didn't stain it. It's very noticeable and does not stain like the wood grain. So generally, this is painted over not stained.

I promise promise promise you this is not stainable, especially with oil based stains. Paintable yes. Don't bother staining.

protip: i believe if this dries out before you finish using it, it can be refreshed by mixing with some acetone

This is stainable/paintable. Says so right on the container. Not sure why other comment said otherwise.

Comments on Amazon say it doesn't take stain well. I'll try some and see, cheap enough I guess.

** I didn't see the area that said stain too. Thanks.

Can vouch for this. Painting is fine but I wouldn't use this with stain except maybe for small brad nail holes.

Is this a good product to patch a drywall hole caused by a drywall anchor and then put the anchor back in the same exact spot?

Drywall joint compound is your best bet, it's what they use for joints and screw/nail dimples when installing it. Note it will shrink - you'll want to put on the least amount possible to avoid sanding, with the idea in mind it will require multiple coats.

Note that this is not structural, so re-installing something in the same exact spot won't work.

I have the non-drydex version of it, and it works very well. It is quite workable and dries to a hard finish.

One can paint it. One can stain it as well, though it will never accept stain like wood and look blotchy.

I can also assure you this i cannot be stained. It will show up like a big light spot if stained.
