Combine with 32 gb of RAM and a 1 TB M2 SSD for $125, would be a solid general office computer for under $300

i3 = lowest core count, with hyperthreading
i5 = highest core count, no hyperthreading
i7 = highest core count, hyperthreading
generation is every 1-2 years years, every generation has 1 or 2 numbers (but they follow the numbers for simplicity so even though 8 and 9 series are both 8th generation they are called 8th and 9th).
13xx14xx = 2023/24
12xx = 2021/22
11xx = 2020
10xx =2019
08xx09xx = 2017
Each gen generally has a new socket, so they are not upgradable to new gens, but they are upgradable to Xeons in the same gen.

The big gen shifts were 07, when it went to DDR4 ram from DDR3, and 12 when they started using P and E cores and can use DDR5.

you can upgrade to Windows 11 without issue. I bought one of these during the last sale and it's running Windows 11 Pro now.

Only complaint was that it didnt' come with wireless but a low profile card from Amazon and some more RAM made it work great for a computer for the garage.

3070 micro w/ i3-9100T, the optiplex 7070 micro w/ i5-9500T/9600T or a N100 machine for homelab use?

Microsoft say 8th gen or above so should be fine.

Anyone have a consensus on this vs a N100 (~$160) for a home media server? Looks like the 3070 uses 3.5 watts under load which just sips energy as well

The cheaper rigs have no WIFI, is it a mere buying a card off amazon and installing it? How about the antennas?

Anyone w .02c on this comment please?

TY!

You could just use a USB WiFi dongle with antenna.

I just bought a sff 3070 9500. Threw some ram in and a small arc video card, thing is so nice for the price.

I generally avoid buying refurbished stuff but I have had great experiences with Dell refurbished. Bought a 5070 micro recently for my homelab and have it running a simple setup of Plex connected to a 18tb drive and Qbit through Gluetun. Great condition and fast shipping. Have had bad experiences on eBay earlier.

Nice, what Arc card did you install? I have a 3070/9500 as well, but that 16x slot is right next to the PSU, and it looks like only a true single slot (No heatsink/fan protrusion) and board power only GPU will fit. Needs to be low profile as well.

I've seen the A380, but the fans on that ASRock model stick out a ton and basically make it a 2 slot card.

Yep it's definitely a cozy spot so I opted for the sparkle a310. It's single slot and leaves just enough room for the fan. I also put in a case fan which thankfully takes air right into the card to help with that.

If you go with this have some thermal paste on hand though, for whatever reason sparkle decided you need to remove the GPU heatsink to swap to the low height bracket
