Been doing computers for 30 years and I still don't understand intel's system for identifying processors. "i3 9th gen" FFS.

i3 = lowest core count, with hyperthreading
i5 = highest core count, no hyperthreading
i7 = highest core count, hyperthreading
generation is every 1-2 years years, every generation has 1 or 2 numbers (but they follow the numbers for simplicity so even though 8 and 9 series are both 8th generation they are called 8th and 9th).
13xx14xx = 2023/24
12xx = 2021/22
11xx = 2020
10xx =2019
08xx09xx = 2017
Each gen generally has a new socket, so they are not upgradable to new gens, but they are upgradable to Xeons in the same gen.

The big gen shifts were 07, when it went to DDR4 ram from DDR3, and 12 when they started using P and E cores and can use DDR5.

I generally avoid buying refurbished stuff but I have had great experiences with Dell refurbished. Bought a 5070 micro recently for my homelab and have it running a simple setup of Plex connected to a 18tb drive and Qbit through Gluetun. Great condition and fast shipping. Have had bad experiences on eBay earlier.
It helps to try to stick to sellers with multiple units, as that means they are generally reselling off-lease stuff from an enterprise refresh.
Honestly though, I but refurbs off ebay all the time and have rarely had an issue with Dell Optis or HP Pro/Elite stuff. It takes a lot to kill them and they tend to run great even when they are cosmetically beat up.

That's good that they corrected those issues, but I wonder why those faulty/inferior parts were sent to a customer in the first place. "Refurbished" should mean the device and its components (battery, charger, etc.) were all verified as in good operational condition. If they missed these two things, it makes one wonder about the quality of their refurbishment process.

I've bought two laptops from Dell Refurbished. 1st one was specified as quailty B and arrived in like new condition. Worked great for years then I sold it to buy another laptop. 2nd laptop I purchased from Dell Refurbished was purported to be quality B but came with a broken left touchpad button and one of the filthiest keyboards I have ever seen (it was chock full of dead skin, human hair and food crumbs). I returned it to Dell for a full refund (they also, of course, paid for return shipping), but this experience wasted over 2 weeks of my time (waiting for laptop, receiving it, then having to drive to UPS store to return a poor quality product).

If it's a good deal I might give Dell Refurbished another try, but based on my 50% bad experience I have some doubts about their refurbishment process.
It's because they (and basically everyone else) aren't doing much besides a Windows reinstall and quick check to make sure it boots up.

I've definitely gotten laptops with bad batteries (that's the most common problem) but I've also seen keyboard issues (again a laptop so not an easy fix) and one with a bad display.

Still, dellrefurbished.com has great customer service and will either discount you for flaws you can live with or will ship a replacement if they have something comparable.
We use them all the time for clients that want to do a multiple machine refresh on a budget. They're a good seller. If you can handle more risk for a better bargain, hit up FB or eBay and you'll save some more money.

Can anyone tell me what the model numbers relate to? I want SFF, but diff between 3070, 3080, 5070, etc.
For laptops:
the first digit is the series/family number (usually equates to the "trim" level like on a car)
the second digit is screen size,
the third digit is the generation,
and the fourth is for variation.
So a Dell Latitude e6230 was a 6 series laptop (mid-grade) with a 12.5" screen, 3rd Gen Intel chip (doesn't always equate numerically to the Intel series), and it wasn't a variant of the 623x model.

For desktops, it's basically the same but the second digit is a 0 because there's no screen.
A 3xxx model will have less ports (maybe no USB-C), less RAM slots, and things like that vs a 5xxx or 7xxx model.

For sizes you have:
MT=MiniTower
SFF = Small form factor
MFF = Micro form factor
UFF = Ultra (modular?) form factor
There used to be DT (Desktop) and USFF (Ultra Small form factor) too, but I haven't seen these lately.

Note that Dell recently reused the OptiPlex 7010 model designation and probably another that I'm forgetting in their laptops. So make sure you're getting the current one and not one that's 10+ years old if you're trolling eBay.

If you really need it and can't find a variant with WLAN included, it's less than $15 for the card, antennas, and wiring.

You didn't though -- they update the stock to keep variety and to keep FOMO. My friend works for dell running AI models that do this stuff in order to maximize buying patterns. They don't even really know how it works, but apparently it does.

Good afternoon. How would these work running a web based stock program and supporting 4 screens of market data? I'm currently using a Linux system and the slowdowns are becoming problematic. Thanks in advance for the expertise!

The cheaper rigs have no WIFI, is it a mere buying a card off amazon and installing it? How about the antennas?

Anyone w .02c on this comment please?

or use an ethernet cable and not pollute your house with EMF, especially with kids around that hampers/screws up their development. or don't pay attention and pretend i didn't write this.
