This is the first time I've seen the refurbished Era 300s on Sonos' website. This is a good deal if you missed out at the end of February for the 30% upgrade credit. $359/each compared to new at $449/each. Enjoy!
I bought a pair of these for surrounds to replace Sonos One surrounds in an Arc, 2x Sub, One surround setup. I also have a pair of Fives in a stereo pair. I tested them in stereo pair with some spatial audio tracks on Apple music before adding them as surrounds. They do sound great in a stereo pair, its like a vertical wall of enveloping sound. It is a different experience, but I think a pair of fives still sound slightly better in a stereo pair if I could only have one. They're a bit fuller and louder which makes sense given their relative size.
As surrounds, I watched various scenes in Dune, Interstellar and Oppenheimer. The sound seems to fill all of rear channel area, which is the point I guess. I don't think I would pay full price for them just for the sole purpose of using as surrounds. They seem a better value being used in a stereo pair, if you have Apple Music. I usually use Spotify which does not support spatial/dolby atmos audio. I think with the 30% off upgrade credit the price is more palatable for surrounds and I will keep them.
It would be really amazing if Sonos made it possible through a hub or otherwise, where you could use Era 300s as your Front L and R channels, with Atmos, and repurposed the Arc L and R speakers to the Center channel for a much better combined center channel. Then being able to use your Era 300s in the front as a stereo pair with your sub. But I wanted that same functionality to be used with the Fives and it will probably never happen.

If only the subs weren't so absurdly expensive.
