Flaking has nothing to do with the paint, Zojirushi mugs are not dishwasher-safe.
It's relatively easy to do, parts all come apart to get rink of the gunk

I'm serious; I went through an entire shift without the coffee being cool enough to drink; sipping only. Having 3/4 of my coffee left halfway through the shift isn't ideal.
The lip is well designed, but it does allow a large flow of the liquid out with a relatively small lip, whereas a larger lip would allow for more sipping/cooling action.

I work in an office setting so YMMV, but I end up pouring into a mug when I get to work because of exactly what you described, too hot for too long.
This should be one of your main reasons to buy this. This is the only thermos I know that the lid comes apart to 3 pieces for extremely easy cleaning and maintenance.
