I personally think the Forerunner 255/265 devices are the Goldilocks zone right now in the Garmin set: they do everything most people need while costing far less than higher models. Long battery life, lightweight, large library of default activities, multi-frequency GPS, sleep stats, body battery, phone notifications, huge library of faces on Garmin Connect, on and on. If you're a backpacker or want to run a different route every day, the 955/965 and Fenix lines with full maps are the way to go, but when I had one of those models, I found I never used the function (I have a bike computer for rides).


He will be able to leave his phone at home while running and allow the watch to record everything natively. It gathers far more info than a phone app (like heart rate, cadence, etc.) and may actually be more accurate on the GPS side.

He will need to link his Garmin account to his Strava account once. After he does that, when he gets home, the watch syncs with the Garmin app on his phone, and Garmin automatically creates corresponding Strava activities. I did this for years, and it does not require an LTE device as suggested by someone above. Any Garmin device that records activities (so all smartwatches) are compatible.

The main daily difference is Vivoactive devices have touch screens and Forerunner devices don't. Based on the comparison tool [garmin.com] at Garmin, the 255 also has significantly better battery life, sleep score/insights, incident detection, more default activities, basic/breadcrumb navigation, and compatibility with various accessories. Vivoactive has more golf and breathwork features.

Not a bad deal! In for a 255S in powder gray since I have small wrists. My Vivoactive 3's battery life has been dwindling so this will be a nice replacement.

What's strange about choosing their own proprietary service? It would be strange if they didn't? Besides, Google Pay has rebranded ay least four times due to low adoption. It's far less established than you're suggesting.

How is this watch compared to the vĂ­voactive 4? I really liked it and used it for about a year and it just randomly died last week. Quite upset at Garmin for not sending a new replacement (they are sending a refurb) when I called support.

It's actually not as good. Only half of my credit cards work on garmin pay, but the same ones that don't work on garmin pay DO work on apple pay. When trying to set them up, it says the bank doesn't support it. That said, I'd never leave the house with my phone so I really don't care about even setting up garmin pay. Unless the watch has LTE and can do the same things my phone can like an Apple Watch, the payment features are only useful for emergencies.

I have a Venu 2 Plus and while this has more training features, I prefer the ability to use voice commands. Choose the features that matter to you and buy the watch that covers what you care about.

My son is a runner. He uses Strava (on an Android phone) when he runs. Can he use this watch with Strava without carrying his phone with him when running? It appears that this watch cannot directly run Strava app.
