I personally think the Forerunner 255/265 devices are the Goldilocks zone right now in the Garmin set: they do everything most people need while costing far less than higher models. Long battery life, lightweight, large library of default activities, multi-frequency GPS, sleep stats, body battery, phone notifications, huge library of faces on Garmin Connect, on and on. If you're a backpacker or want to run a different route every day, the 955/965 and Fenix lines with full maps are the way to go, but when I had one of those models, I found I never used the function (I have a bike computer for rides).


He will be able to leave his phone at home while running and allow the watch to record everything natively. It gathers far more info than a phone app (like heart rate, cadence, etc.) and may actually be more accurate on the GPS side.

He will need to link his Garmin account to his Strava account once. After he does that, when he gets home, the watch syncs with the Garmin app on his phone, and Garmin automatically creates corresponding Strava activities. I did this for years, and it does not require an LTE device as suggested by someone above. Any Garmin device that records activities (so all smartwatches) are compatible.

The main daily difference is Vivoactive devices have touch screens and Forerunner devices don't. Based on the comparison tool [garmin.com] at Garmin, the 255 also has significantly better battery life, sleep score/insights, incident detection, more default activities, basic/breadcrumb navigation, and compatibility with various accessories. Vivoactive has more golf and breathwork features.

We won't get an update on Strava unless he gets the Garmin with LTE. You can still update the info when he get back to his phone. It syncs to Strava via the Garmin app.

I've had the Garmin 245 Music for 3 years and I will replace it when the time comes with another 2X5. Love the battery life, love the buttons, love the functionality, love the aesthetic of it.

Excellent watch. I owned two Android Wear watches and they aged very quickly.

I have a 735xt that still works pretty well, but I've been really interested in the more advanced sleep metrics and HRV stuff of the newer watches. I was going to jump into the 965 for a big upgrade and oled screen, but haven't been able to justify the price to myself. Hadn't considered the 255, but at this price, the advanced sleep metrics, power meter support, and Garmin pay might just do it for me. Would mainly be day to day fitness/smart and record hikes/walks. I use a Garmin edge for cycling, which is 99% of my exercise. This seems like a solid upgrade and way to modernize my current watch at a decent price.

What's your opinion on the Garmin Instinct? Got it on clearance for $70, assume it's a no brainer for that price, even though it's an older model? (Currently using Apple Watch as daily driver)

FWIW, I bought this watch a few weeks ago. As someone who started running more consistently within the last year and this being my first fitness watch, I like it a lot! It has more features than I expected. I was tracking with Strava on my phone, but it's nice to be able to leave my phone home now.
I didn't get the music version but that was intentional because a lot of races don't allow headphones anyway so I'm getting used to running without music. If I'm in the gym, the signal from my phone to my watch/ headphones is sufficient to leave the phone with my stuff and I can still control what's playing.
Garmin coach is cool. Only complaint is I wish a missed workout could easily be moved to another day. There is a way to select a past workout, or remember to pause coach. But you can't move it once the workout has been missed.
I don't miss a touch screen (never had a watch with one), the MIP display shows well in sunlight, and the battery life is good.
I also like that I can build out my lifting workouts in the app and track them in real- time with my watch.
Again, this is my first fitness watch, so I can't compare to anything else but I would highly recommend it.

I love it for mountain bike riding and health tracking. The battery life is amazing but the Notifications from your phone have some space for improvement!

I got mine from gamestop for $65 last year, so id say $70 at target is a good deal

I just got the galaxy watch 5 pro lte for $150 so giving that a go... but honestly miss the simplicity of the instinct

Not sure why anyone would buy a watch like this without an OLED display. It is a night and day difference and the battery life is still amazing. If it were less than 100, maybe.
