The boundary pass parka is 650 down while the microtherm is 800 but reviews describe the boundary pass as great for really cold weather. Anybody got any experience with these? Thanks

The Boundary Pass is your generic 650 down coat you can get at that price anytime at Marshall's. The Microtherm is a much higher quality jacket (part of EB's First Ascent line). The Boundary Pass will be warmer but it is going to a lot bulkier. I would get the Microtherm and layer it.

Thanks for the info. I ask because I have the microtherm 2.0 and without layering it's just ok below 45-50. But i think with the these thin down jackets you have to expect to layer.

Check out the downlight jackets which uses more 800 fill than the microtherm. Still super light jacket compared to the parkas and you shouldn't need to layer until sub freezing temps.

the amount of fill matters more than the fill loft for warmth.

heavier jackets will use 650. ultralight use 800.

I have both.
For my use which isn't mountain climbing or dog sledding, I prefer the Microtherm. I'm just getting in and out of my car in the cold Chicago winters and maybe a walk of a few blocks. Most of the time I can get away with no long sleeve layer under. Just a short sleeve T-shirt and an undershirt. If the wind chill is below 0 a long sleeve layer is used. The microtherms will leak a little over time as they have a lot of seams. Of the two I'd choose the Microtherm. If you're near an EB store they should have both of them. I need a tall so I have to order online most times.
If you don't care for the color, there's an Evertherm jacket on sale. I would chose those over both of these.

I have the boundary pass and love it. Keep in mind, it's bulky, and not meant for activity like the first ascent products, but for walking around town or just being outside, it will keep you very warm.

I think you'll notice the quality difference between the two. I have lots of EB clothing and the jump in detail is substantial from regular or Costco EB to First Ascent. First Ascent gets extra stitching in stress areas and sometimes even an extra pocket (on their lined pants).
Yes, you can get warmer by buying a really puffy 500 fill coat but it just starts to look ridiculous and if you do any exertion, the jacket turns into a sauna.
Like someone else said, I'd look at their other 800 down jackets or wait for them to go on sale.

I just bought a microtherm 2.0 with no hood from this deal for 88$. I prefer my own hat or the ability to pair with a hooded sweatshirt underneath anyway.

Only a couple colors are clearance plus extra 60% off. Not a weak deal if you actually pay attention.

I bought the microtherm for $88 through the recent deal and I'm going to return it. It was thinner than expected, barely kept me warm while stationary in 50 degree weather, and was already leaking down. I get that it's meant for layering but I have a lot of clothing to layer with, from thermal layers to fleece to hoodies and hardshells. For puffers I want something I can just throw on and not have to worry much about what I'm wearing under or over it, and it didn't seem durable enough to survive my other rougher activities (climbing, hiking, backpacking, etc.) as a mid layer.

Does anyone know if you can remove the fur in the hood? Couldn't imagine walking around town with that on…
