This isn't a bad price for a 3060, but it's still not a great value. You can occasionally find new rx 6600, which are less than 10% slower in 1080p gaming, for $180 or under. New rx 6600xt, which are very slightly faster than the 3060 in 1080p gaming, can be found at $200 or under, though stock at those prices seems to have mostly dried up.

There are some downsides to an amd rdna2 card even in this price tier, namely a lack of dlss and cuda. The 12gb of vram is mostly pointless on the 3060, since it lacks the performance to adequately play games that would use anywhere near that much. Likewise, the raytracing advantage is moot in this performance tier.

Ultimately, even at $245, unless you have non-gaming workloads that the 3060 would be beneficial for, at this price tier you would be better off getting an amd card.

The peanut gallery can never compare apples and oranges. They'll measure new prices vs used then whine about condition / warranty on used vs new. They want everything both ways. Said thing is they are still running a 8800 GTX waiting for that 'next' card to release

BTW, are we still saying "hOlD tHe LiNe BoYz" or is that over?

Really depends on what you are doing with it. I'm going to assume gaming is what you are asking and again the question is what types of games. Fortnite, Rocket League, and COD are going to run like butter on a 1060 at 1080p. Most of the newer RPG's and sims (CyberPunk, Forza, Last of Us 2) are going to really stress the 1060.

1080p I'm currently playing bf1, bf5, batman arkham trilogy, just picked up ff15 and I bought the complete CyberPunk package at gog but it locked up the whole machine and I got freaked EEK!

and rep'd for your future response

What the heck is going on in this thread?

Of course a 3060 priced at $250 is a good deal.

It has nothing to do with your personal opinion of how much it should cost. That's what the market is dictating, so that's why they're still $300 on average. This is the capitalism you voted for, so live with it.

As for comparisons to other cards, yes, we know there are Radeons with similar performance for less. You don't have to repeat this on every thread. Some of us need CUDA or want to run stable diffusion without pulling our hair out.

Speaking of stable diffusion, that's one reason you'd want the 12GB card over the 8GB. Not everything is about gaming performance.
I'm tempted to buy this for ML type of experimentation as well. Although Intel is working on oneAPI, AMD ROCm, and Apple MPS, CUDA has the least amount of problems.

My only concern is the 12GB VRAM. It doesn't seem enough considering the exponentially more complex model that came out these past 2 years. Not sure if I should buy something with 16GB. The closest competitor being Arc 770 16GB. But there's an issue with Arrays larger than 4 GB crashes.

Is just got a RX 6800 CORE for $380, because of the 16gb vRAM. Anyone have any insightful opinions as to whether or not that was a better purchase?

Given that, the answer to your original upgrade question is yes. Personally I'd try and get a used 3060 ti under $300 if it were me. The EVGA ones are LHR so very unlikely they were ever used for mining.

at that point, you may as well put a few more in and get a 3070.

but if we're there, just go all the way and grab a 3080.

You can price-climb all you want. If they had a 2060 and it died, a 3060 would be a decent bump and a good replacement
No, cause 3070 isn't a significant jump from a 3060ti. Sure make the jump to 3080 if u got the $.
The sweet spot for the 3000series card is the 3060ti and 3080.

Yes. You will see a significant jump in performance from a 1060 to 3060. Not only because the architecture is better/newer but because you will be able to take advantage of DLSS which will greatly improve your FPS in games. I say go for it

Funny, people were "complaining" about 8gb not being enough and now you're complaining about 12gb not being enough. When does it end??

Still ridiculous how people bought into the gpu hype. Gpus should be priced way lower than even todays prices without a "sale". There was a time when true evolutionary leaps did not need a marketing hype machine to guerilla marketing tech products. The tech spoke for itself. The harder nvidia and Amd push, the more skeptical you should be about the value the product brings to your daily life.

I had a few 3Dfx cards, including the Voodoo 5 5500. At that time, nothing came close to touching it. Too bad some really poor business decisions (like making their own cards) led to their downfall.
Yup, I still have my 5500. In a display case for nostalgic reasons
