FYI, if anyone is wondering, the ads are skipped using ublock origin. I have been on the ad subscription for 2.99 per month for a while and no ads when I watch in my browser.

Not a deal like the old deals, but none of them are anymore. This is pretty decent with the Amex (varies per cardholder) or Chase (below) combined with it. I only purchase commercial free 4K, so this would work for me (using Chase $35) to be less than $9 a month.

Chase

How bad are the ads on Max? Netflix ads are not too bad and often do not display based on the orange marker. Prime ads are more annoying.

Literally nothing to watch on there

Still have my $1.99 deal from black friday and barely used hbo like 6 times
I let mine go for sure. I'll buy for a few months to watch game of thrones then cancell. I fell for this year stuff before. Hulu is putting out way better content.

On mobile they arent great. For a 20-30 minute show, I get around 2 minutes of ads, and its often the same ads. There is also an ad when you pause it. I'm only on the ad version due to the blackfriday deal but I kinda regret getting the ad subscription and not ad-free.

Highest tier shouldn't exist. 4K should be included in the middle tier. Arbitrary download quotas are pretty stupid, too.

Good tip, but no surround sound in browser. OK if watching on stereo device.

Depends. Sometimes, they'll have a "sponsored" placement in which you view it at the beginning and the rest of the episode/movie is ad free. I've seen those under 20 seconds. Seems like it was centered on the new and popular material because I can't remember getting that watching older material. My younger bro is the one that actually does most of the viewing though and I just ask him...he said they aren't too bad and "definitely not as bad as Hulu." Take that for what you will 😃 Id also add though that if you are going to be watching sports on Max, you get the ads regardless of tier. One may think that the NBA games shown thru the week could be enjoyed ad free but it doesn't work that way. It is nice to be able to catch games without paying for a live service though.

It looks like when our current plan expires, it'll renew at $139.99, instead of $199.99.
Thanks op!

In my mind, there is no question about it - Max needs to improve. Their content has definitely started to wane in quantity, even though quality is still high. But then too, their high quality programming is too one-dimensional; all of them are adult skewing. They need some family-friendly hits. I know some people question their name change, but I can see why they did it. People with kids would not consider HBO as their primary streaming service. The brand is too heavily associated with adult skewing content. But changing just the name is not enough. They need to follow it up with more diverse content.

Even though they are still popular because of the HBO name, they seem to be relying too much on their past laurels.
Of course, when it comes to quantity of new content, nobody can touch Netflix; so no point even making that comparison. But recently, Max seems to be behind even Prime in quantity of new content. And Apple TV+ has been remarkably consistent in quality of their new content.

I don't think Max will go anywhere. They are still too big. But they are definitely declining. I hope for the sake of healthier competition in the streaming market they start doing better.

Little searching and it seems it doesn't include A&E, History or Lifetime content.

Really frustrating they block 4K/atmos behind the most expensive plan. 😞 Debating doing this though, better than Black Friday which only had the ad-free plan which I'm about to let expire.

Edit: …actually my Black Friday deal runs into May so I'd have to create a new account because they seemingly times this deal to end just before that. 😡
