What does that look like? How many miles, how many hills?

I grew up riding a mountain bike to high school. Didn't know any better, it was just what we did. Never saw dirt. I tried doing that again as an adult in an area with hills, and it was awful.

I bought a hybrid "gravel" bike, basically looks like a mountain bike but without the shocks and with smoother, skinnier tires. It was about 25 lbs, took long rides all over the county with it. Way different experience, the mountain bike felt like I was pedalling squares, as they say.

I got a true drop bar road bike and I'm even happier now.

Long story short, people drive pickup trucks and SUVs to and from work every day, the handling sucks, the fuel efficiency is terrible, but for whatever reason the other things about those vehicles make these people happy. That's what you'd be doing with these mountain bikes; they're heavier, their tires are meant for dirt. Those things don't mean a lot when you're in a car and can just hit the gas. But it also doesn't have to mean a lot if you're just riding around at the park either. You'll never know what you're missing, but it won't really matter to you, either. Ignorance is bliss!

Sale prices: great. Diamondback's website: not. Tried for awhile to order a Hook and never made it past the first checkout step.

Very novice rider, would either the Overdrive 1 or Hook be appropriate as primarily a casual road bike?

Thanks for the reply.

I live in a very flat area, and will be mostly riding with my kids on paved roads and sidewalks. It's possible that I do some very casual trail riding if I get into it, but I'm not sure if that'll happen.

I was just looking at these as maybe something that's a little better quality than what you'd find at Walmart. The Division 2 model looks like the cheapest option that's made for my use-case (though I don't know if it can even do light trails).

Of course it's possible that a cheap $200 walmart bike might be enough for my needs.

Unless you have a diamondback dealer nearby to save on shipping, you should also consider the dicks deal:

Anyone have a 20% off coupon for this upcoming weekend in Northern Virginia or know where to find them?

There is one within a reasonable-ish drive from me (edit: nvm, not even an option for pickup). I did see that deal but the reviews look pretty bad...

If you look at diamondback brand, get Haanjo 1 when it's on sale for $300-400 range. It's a flat bar gravel great value bike, and will fit your needs well

I can vouch for Diamondback Bikes. I've had one since 1985 that I still ride today.

Thanks but Haanjo 1 doesn't even exist on their website and doesn't seem to really be on sale anymore.

The bike is fine. We got one for our 14yo to see if he was going to get into MTBing. We've since graduating him to a Giant Trance and he's 17. So the GT Pro took abuse from a 14yo for 3 years without a hiccup. It's a perfectly good bike with decent drivetrain and specs. At $300 you can't go wrong and it's MUCH better than the Walmart bikes. You can also sell it when you're done for ~ $100 - $150 so your total ownership outlay should be minimal.

Thank you. It is reasonable for road use?

For kicks, I tried it.

Yeah, lousy site for sure. I tried it on both FF and Safari. No dice checking out. I was able to make some progress going to /checkout/cart and then /checkout manually and reloading a few times, but really? In 2024 you're gonna have a site that poorly designed?

And you expect people to trust their cc number to a site like THAT?
