Apple is a bit shady nowadays...
Non-pro chip in pro models.
Not directed towards the OP, but just want to point out the hypocrisy over here. Posted this exact deal a month ago and it remained this price for a good 2-3 weeks, and it was heavily downvoted with multiple people whining about this being the regular chip on a Pro model: https://slickdeals.net/f/17278783-apple-macbook-pro-14-liquid-retina-xdr-m3-chip-16gb-ram-512gb-ssd-space-gray-1499-99?src=SiteSearchV2Algo

No, you're stepping down from M1 Pro chip to base M3 chip

Would this be a good upgrade from a 14" MBP with a base M1?

They're not going from M1 Pro to M3 but M1 to M3.

There's no 14 inch m1 non-pro chip.

So happy to see all these segmented models with feature sets that make no sense but to upsell are on a price race to the bottom.

It's not just that. The m3 creates a lot more heat. I read the MacBook m3 is throttled to literally 50% with the lid closed and hooked to an external monitor.

Going from a base 14" M1 Pro to a 14" M3 might actually be a performance upgrade in some regards, but if you ever intend to use 2 external displays, the base M3 only supports 1.

That's the old 13".. 14" MBP is an upgrade in basically every regard - MiniLED backlit screen, better sound, no touchbar, smaller bezel on display, etc.. basically the only thing the 13" boasts over the 14" is not having a notch (which isn't really a problem anyway)

It was the same for the 13" which are now discontinued.. 14" MBP with the M3 (non-Pro) is their way of bridging the gap somewhat, with a more accessibly priced 14" MBP vs the previous $2k starting MSRP... but people will always have something to complain about lol

That's the MacBook Air which has no fan and the issue is when used in clamshell mode. I saw that and definitely concerning but depends on how and what you use.

Seems like there are a lot less active Macbook deals right now, vs a month or so ago when there seemed to be tons. That could be a factor, but yeah.. people do love to thread crap on Apple deals lol

There's also people who still swear 8GB ram is plenty in 2024, and "MaCs uSe meMorY mOre effIciEntLy" to justify the madness.

Put it on a cooling fan laptop stand and problem solved.
