Too shallow for most plants. We have one of the two foot ones which is a lot more money ($140), but is deep enough to grow stuff.

I mean it's shallow but perfect for herbs, strawberries, etc that don't need deep soil

If you are putting it on top of existing soil and not a hard surface it will be fine. There are methods to layer organic material and cardboard first to help draw worms and break up the existing soil so it is ready for the roots when they grow that long.

2ft height would be perfect... i built one 4ft tall and its too hard to fill and a bit tall... 8x3x2 would be perfect

depends where you live. in texas almost all of the soil is clay and most plants won't make it too far down.

if you're in a residential development where the top layer is select fill it would be tough. out in the country it may not matter.

Dig out as much as you want and replace the soil under the bed with Hügelkultur composting material, you still have the benefits of the raised bed, easier accessibility, early warming and growth, creeping weed control, improved drainage, etc.

We planted our gardens in the ground forever. My 12" Raised bed made from 2"x12" has been great every year.
