Why did TP-Link do this? That's anyone's guess. They seem to be direct competitors for the most part.
I heard something about Tapo app supporting kasa devices at some point, but you would have to look into that yourself.
Personally, I use kasa devices and python-kasa, so I'll be sticking to the kasa product lines for the time being.

From what I understand Matter will be an industry standard. So in the future an app would be able to control all Matter Device. (Please correct if I am mistaken)
HomeKit support through Matter is an absolute must. I value my privacy so I only use it through HomeKit
