Because the axe7800 is a budget wifi 6e router and the 88u pro is more of a flagship wifi 6 router with much better processing power and better 5ghz and 2.4ghz radios. I have the ax6000 and briefly had the axe7800, which I sold because I was disappointed with it's performance.
I have this. Do not buy. biggest POS router I've had in a long while. Drops 5GHz connections constantly. Constant problems with 2.4GHz smart devices since getting it.
1.7GHz vs 2.0Ghz processor, 500mb vs 1Gb RAM. 2x2 vs 3x3 2.4 Ghz radio.

If you're buying an ASUS router and the very first thing you check for isn't whether AsusMerlin is supported, you're doing yourself a disservice.

For those wondering, this router isn't supported and may not ever be supported (the GT-AXE11000 is, but so far none of the RT-AXE have been added and it's been about a year).

For that reason alone, I wouldn't recommend this.

6E/6Ghz is very short range and even shorter through walls. You're only gonna be able to use it when you're in the same room as the router, or maybe 6 feet away if there's a wall between you. And only the latest smartphones and laptops can do 6E anyways. It's not worth it
That is such garbage. 6e makes it from my basement to my 2nd floor office. That's 3 levels, and I'll pull around 500mbps with cheap amd motherboard WiFi.

This router provides zero benefit for mesh. You will need need triband routers with two 5Ghz bands for that purpose. 6E is really useless.
6e works great and you can use that band for mesh or run a wire. .

What performance issues did you have? Do you have many devices connected to your router or are you utilizing a function that wasn't working for you?

The 6ghz band on this router was a little faster than the 5ghz on the ax6000 when my devices would connect to the 6ghz band. If you were to close to the router or to far from the speeds were garbage. I only have 1ghz internet so anything faster is overkill for now. A few of my devices have 6e support like Galaxy tab s9, pixel 8, Intel 6e wifi card on desktops. The ax6000 gives me around 950mbps on the 5ghz band but more importantly I get about 700mbps when running a wireguard VPN client on the router.
By '1ghz' internet I think you mean either 1 or 1.25 gbps internet.. The gigahertz part is the carrier frequency and is unrelated to data rates this low, which for wifi is usually 2.4 or 5 ghz

That would be incorrect. As you mentioned if you get a second one or another asus router with 6E it would allow the Wifi 6 band to act as wireless backhaul, while 6E devices could function on the shorter 6E band. When those devices become more numerous it would actually be greatly beneficial. If you decide to keep them closer together than the AI would actually utilize both the 6 and the 6E for wireless backhaul/fronthaul, if you set it to do that.

Then there is always the option to hardwire for backhaul which would than free up all 3 wireless bands to segment your network.

I have this router and like it. The 6e works well for my quest 3. Before I was having to use 2 routers in the same room as a dedicated router just for the quest.
I wanted this solely for my Quest 3! unfortunately it seems that 6Ghz is terrible if you're not in the same room as the router :-(

That's the norm for all 6E routers, they are all if I have to guestimate about 25-30% shorter range on the 6Ghz compared to 5Ghz options included in Wifi 6.

Currently have the RT-AX82U, would I see any benefits in upgrading to this one?

I had similar problems with an Asus RT-AX86S router. I reset it to factory settings and re-set up my network exactly as it was previously. Since then my wi-fi has been extremely stable. I spent hours and hours trying different settings before breaking down and doing this. If someone had told me this advice before I started, I would not have believed them. Now I believe.
I've tried this with no success. Apparently this is not an uncommon problem with this router, as people on reddit have the same issue

I was commenting the post which meant to use one of the band for node to node. If you can wire mesh nodes, then you don't need 2nd 5Ghz band.

In theory, GT-AX6000 and AX88U Pro are better routers for most people. 6E is really useless unless you are a few feet away from router.

In one word, a router at $209 is not cheap for family use.

No catch. the RT-AX88U has 8 rj-45 in the back. 6GHz band is very limited use. In addition it is based on the RT-86U which is very highly regarded.
my dumb question: but if the point is to have a nice wifi router, why does it matter to have more RJ45 connections to hard-wire an ethernet cable to you devices?
