While prices for ssds have drastically increased over the past half year, even in the current awful market this is still nowhere near a good price for a drive of this performance tier. If you really feel like massively overpaying for a 1tb drive from amazon (this is not recommended, just as an example of a bad deal that is a far superior value to the one posted), for only $6 more ($81) you can get the 1tb crucial t500 which has dram and blows the 990 evo out of the water, or for $10 more ($85) the 1tb sn850x which is even better. Let me reiterate again, I'm not recommending either of those drives at those prices, but they're a far better value than this "deal". Typically 2tb drives offer a significantly superior value compared to 1tb drives, but even for a 1tb drive the value proposition of the 990 evo at $75 is poor.

And, here is an alternate take:

The dongknows review you linked specifically compares it to the 970 evo plus (the multiple generations old predecessor to the 990 evo) and the crucial t700, a high performance first-gen true pcie gen5 ssd. Much like the first generation of pcie gen4 drives, pcie gen5 drives like the t700 are immensely power hungry and produce an enormous amount of heat (for a ssd), in exchange for incredible performance. Therefore, in the context of a drive making use of pcie gen5 lanes (though only half as many), the 990 evo is indeed much better suited to thermally constrained use cases. However, that is not because the 990 evo is efficient (it isn't), but solely because the 990 evo is incredibly slow in comparison. Compared to other gen4 drives, the 990 evo's low power draw (good) and poor efficiency (bad) make it a middling option for thermally constrained use cases.
At $75 the 990 evo is a bad purchase, it's as simple as that. If it was $60 or below it would be worth considering.

You are a great writer (besides being knowledgeable about the topic). I wish people on SD can learn from your writing.
