#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Experience the book that started the Quiet Movement and revolutionized how the world sees introverts—and how introverts see themselves—by offering validation, inclusion, and inspiration

"Superbly researched, deeply insightful, and a fascinating read,
Quiet is an indispensable resource for anyone who wants to understand the gifts of the introverted half of the population."—Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY PeopleO: The Oprah MagazineChristian Science MonitorInc.Library JournalKirkus Reviews

At least one-third of the people we know are introverts. They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over working in teams. It is to introverts—Rosa Parks, Chopin, Dr. Seuss, Steve Wozniak—that we owe many of the great contributions to society.

In Quiet, Susan Cain argues that we dramatically undervalue introverts and shows how much we lose in doing so. She charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal throughout the twentieth century and explores how deeply it has come to permeate our culture. She also introduces us to successful introverts—from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Passionately argued, impeccably researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how they see themselves.

Now with Extra Libris material, including a reader's guide and bonus content

Hey, any excuse to stay in and read.
I really enjoyed quiet. As an introvert, it helped me feel more normal and like I provide a unique value in certain situations.
Don't let the fake corporate conditioning get you down my brother. Also, make sure to get back at your enemies the best way; Without them having a clue as to the who or why.

My current HR called introverts abnormal during our on boarding process. I had to step back to make sure that was what she said. Some HR try too hard at creating a social culture.
I hope you raised a complaint about that demeaning and discriminatory language to your--wait, nevermind...

This book changed the way I interact with people and manage my teams. It helped me understand so many things I did not know about introverts. As a person who is primarily an extrovert the insight in the book needs to be taught in management schools.

Real introverts don't write books about introverts.

Actually, writing is exactly what they do. What they don't do is talk about it.

As an older introvert/40's, I might actually give this a read at $2 despite money being tight for me.
Growing up, I've sort of felt trained to believe I'm abnormal or ashamed, and almost wish I could get my mom to read this… She always gives a look like I'm strange or embarrassing. 😕

This is actually a really good read. Had a manager recommend this for me after he picked up on me being a big introvert.

That is a rare manager. I won't be so bold as to claim that they are good or bad based on one comment but that does show insight and self-improvement on a scale that many managers lack

For anyone who has never taken a personality test but maybe just thinks they are an introvert, I highly recommend finding a good one to give you insights into your stereotypes and tendencies. Here is a solid, ~20-minute test that is free: https://www.humanmetrics.com/personality

Obviously, take time to consider your results and how valid you actually find that they are. I have maybe had one person over the years tell me that they didn't really agree with the results but I've had dozens and dozens of people take it with the goal of understanding how to supervise our work with them more efficiently.

I think this book would be an excellent companion to some of the insights a personality test can bring.

One of the most impactful things I ever read about introverts is that we are ENERGY GIVERS while extroverts are ENERGY TAKERS. When we interact with people, it is draining while extroverts gain energy by being around others. That may be obvious to some but I had never thought of it like that and it helped me to reshape how I think about being with others and be more strategic with my energy levels. Years later, I found out I also had narcolepsy so I live every day feeling like I've been awake for 24-48 hours no matter what amount of sleep I get. The insights about my personality tendencies and ways to cope have been even more important for me over the last 10 years than ever.

Another good thing to note is that there is hope for anyone who has social anxiety brought on by being an introvert is that you can 'change'! During college, I saw successful people who were outgoing and people gravitated to. I wanted to emulate that to be successful and forced myself into constantly increasingly uncomfortable situations as practice. I am no matter at being an extrovert but I can hold the room if I, "turn on the switch" (as my wife calls it). This is an extremely draining trial for my energy levels and if I'm worn out, I simply can't maintain it without great willpower. My main point is, if you feel awkward, you aren't. If you feel like you could never be a confident presence, you can. Study people, study yourself, reflect, and force yourself to practice at how you want to present yourself. You don't have to become a new person or change who you are at your core but we all have it within ourselves to bend our own behaviors to better fit what we want to become.

I hope this helps someone who might need to hear it!
