I've purchased two pairs of these, and paid more than this each time. I genuinely don't think you'll find a better deal at this price point. My ONLY complaint (more like an observation) is that they're a bit soft on the treble, but you can counter that my turning it up a little bit. That aside, these punch way above their price point.

At this price, this is the Edifier speaker to get. It's a repeat of the lowest ever price. Check out this YouTube channel with extensive sound comparisons between multiple Edifier speakers:

I have two different sets of Edifiers (2000s and 1280BTs) and am more than pleased with both. They have held up great over 4+ years. They put out a solid product.

I only wish the 2000's had a sub out, but hindsight...

I use the S2000MKIIIs in my living room and find they get pretty loud and deep, especially for just bookshelf speakers. Of course, it's nothing compared to using a sub, but just for "normal" watching and listening I've found it's plenty of juice.

(I have a pair of The Nines in my basement hooked up to an SVS PB2000. That gets unnecessarily loud and deep.)

Having used variants of both the R1280 and R1700, the R1700 series is the only one I'd recommend. I was quite disappointed by the R1280.

Good feedback, thanks. But the 1280 has an optical input and a sub output. On the other hand, the 1700 has more power and Bluetooth aptx (1280 has v4.0 but not aptx). I guess you can't get everything in one of these models, so choose based on your needs.

Question about the Edifier R1280DB, also on sale for $99...

They have optical input, so I can connect my PC sound card's optical out into these speakers and they can decode (via interna DAC) any signal the PC sends out, from mp3 to 24/96 flac (high definition audio) and play it without hiccup?

In terms of sound-quality, are they above the Monoprice DT-4BT?

Not an audio person here, so be nice.

Would these be "better" than my current Bose Companion III 2.0 speakers which I use for the computer and casual listening?

I recognize they have bluetooth, which isn't a major "feature" for my use case. Both these and the Bose are in the same general price range, the bose being smaller in physical size. I've been fairly happy with them.

This should go well with my orange Audio Technica LP60 refurbished I got during a recent deal.

I like the fact these have APTX. Opt In would be nice, but in my case they are primarily being used as a wireless system in my work area.

For those wondering:

https://www.sony.net/Products/LDAC/

These speakers do not have Bluetooth LDAC codec support, so don't expect wireless audio to have great treble (High frequency) because the generic BT SBC / AAC won't have it because the codecs cut off high frequencies.

But let's face it, not buying a KRK or higher end pair of BT monitoring speakers here...

I'm very satisfied with the 1280DBs paired with a subwoofer, and the small form factor made for easy and unobtrusive wall mounting. I'd not be satisfied with either one without a sub, but the 1700 is clearly better without a sub.

The 1280 with a properly tuned sub is a great little set and offer slightly better connectivity than the 1700, but the 1700 has better Bluetooth abilities. For non-critical TV setup in a spare room, the optical input and sub out on the DBs models is very appreciated. You can't go wrong with either .

For nearfield like on a desk, I'd choose the MR4s over the 1700s. I've got my 1280's treble bumped up a tiny bit, and the sub crossed over at about 100Hz, and it's well rounded for the size.
