This is a lot of bad information! 1) New refers to condition, not model. It is a 4, they just released the 6. 2) They have always had metal and alcantara options. The second option listed is a 4 with a metal surface. 3) try washing your hands
Not the latest machine, but it's quite bit better than most modern laptops in terms of build quality and screen. Essentially almost like MacBook build quality in windows
IT here, I can confirm the build quality on these things is excellent. I have deployed hundreds of these things and I can count the hardware failures on one hand. I tried deploying Lenovos recently because a client wanted to cheap out, and it did NOT go well, 20% of them had hardware issues. I convinced them to go back to Surfaces.

How long does Alcantara last, especially around the palm rest area?
The Intel model runs circles around this. There's no reason to get the trashier AMD model when the former is just a few dollars more.
The only thing better in this is the battery life, but that's just adding more to an already good battery life regardless of the model.
An AMD machine beating Intel in battery life. Oh how times have changed
For a few dollars more, are you referring to the Intel i5 version? The article linked below discusses the differences between the two comparable processors. I agree the i7 is a lot better but it is also 90 dollars more.
Yes, I was referring to the i7 model. It has much better single-core performance as well as significantly better GPU performance and justifies the $70-90 jump.
But you are correct, when compared to the i5 this AMD model is on par or just a tad bit better than it again, only in multi-core and battery. The GPU and single-core performance of i5 is still better.

This is not new. This has that fabric palm-rest that will eventually turn into mush. The new ones are all-metal.
I can attest to this. Worked at a clinic where they had these Alcantara fabric keyboard and they were super dark from all the oils over the years. Granted they were around 3 years old and still worked perfectly fine.
The material is alcantara and is very durable. It's used in plenty of cars and holds up well. I know someone who's got one of the first Surface laptops and it's still good even after years of daily use.
alcantara
I thought they closed that back in 1963!!!
I bought an intel refurb late last year. It's alcantara and the keyboard panel is "spongy"/flexible. Doesn't affect my usage/typing, but seemed odd. I have tried numerous different aftermarket USB-C chargers and cables and the ONLY charger I have been able to get use-C charging to work with are genuine Applele 20W chargers and that has worked with every different usb-c cable I have tried. 20w works, but is slow. I haven't researched why only the real apple works. Other 20w don't. I have not tried different wattage apple usb-c chargers. Three different apple 20w chargers all work every time.
Otherwise the laptop has been great so far.
Can anyone comment on how hard it is to swap out the laptop NVMe? The last time I changed a laptop, it was MacBook with an HDD, that I upgraded to an SSD. My Microsoft surface pro 3 doesn't seem to have an easy way to upgrade the space. I have NVMe in my desktops, and I appreciate the speed. But 256 GB is pretty small.
Will this connect to a USB c hub for dual monitors and charging? I don't see anything about that in spec.
It can not charge via USB-C, if that's what you're asking.
The hardware supports it but Microsoft didn't make it available for SL4 for God knows what reason.

It won't get warm unless you are playing a game or such
