I honestly feel like Gain cleans our family's clothes as well as Tide ever did. We used Tide for years, but my daughter brought home Gain because of the scent, and we have used it ever since. BTW I am an operator at a refinery, so I have diesel fuel, burner fuel, and gasoline range material on my clothing regularly. So, for hydrocarbon based stains, I can attest that there is no difference between the cleaning power of these brands better than most.

Having no experience with Tide and doing no personal research, I was curious if Tide is actually proven to be superior to Gain, with testing.

Like you, I'm using Gain because someone else in the family liked the scent. We mostly don't ever have stained or super dirty clothes, like you with the fuel from work, so I wonder how important all of that is.

Also, never tried the Oxi variety. Anyone know if its significantly better than regular plain Gain?

I just know this: science fair projects I have seen have shown that tide is better than most others..

Based on the ingredients, it should clean pretty well. The secret is to always look for enzymes. That's the ingredient that many bargain detergents lack. This Gain has three enzymes, which is better than many cheaper brands, e.g. Arm and Hammer only has two, and one version has none. Amylase [which is in your saliva] and Mannanase break down carbohydrates while Subtilisin breaks down proteins. Sodium lauryl sulfate handles the fats. Protein, carbohydrate and fat are the main components of food and other organic sources of stains.

Pretty much every consumer study has shown Tide and Persil to be the top detergents. Tide is the bestseller in America while Persil is top in Europe. Comparisons show them to be comparable, with each besting the other for specific stains. A recent report gave a very tiny edge to Tide.

Note that Tide has many versions. Their Basics line, for example, had only average performance So if you want top performance, you'll need to buy the most expensive versions.

In truth, cheaper detergents like Gain and Arm&Hammer are just fine for most people. Most of us don't have to deal with chocolate, wine and grass stains on a regular basis. I use a pre-treater and keep a small bottle of Tide for those rare occasions when I do have a tough stain. For for regular washes, this Gain is a much more economical option.

Note that Gain also has different versions. Another SlickDeal has OdorBuster Gain for roughly the same price. It apparently has added ingredients to get rid of odors but it only has two enzymes (see my previous comment on enzymes). That version is missing Mannanase, which breaks down carbohydrates. But it still has Amylase for carbs and Subtilisin for proteins, which should be fine for most people.

So choose your Gain whether you want better cleaning or better odor riddance.

Looks like we're talking 5 cents per load. Tide is 20 cents per load whereas Gain is 15 cents per load, making it 25% which is a significant number in general, except we're talking pennies and if I'm single I'm maybe doing 6-8 loads per month, survey says, 40 cents per month, 5 dollars a year in savings. (families could combine loads making multiplying times per person not so relevant, but even for a household of 4 people, it's $20/year)

Since I don't have stains hardly ever and even if I do, there's stain treatments like Shout, I choose Gain because I like the smell and the money saved is almost irrelevant.

how's the smell like? I have never used Gain products before
It used to smell really good and I would use it on all the washings. I even picked up Gains dishwashing liquid because I loved the scent. But I think they changed the formula. Now the smell is very generic.
