Ordered last month from Aliexpress and came in the 2-3 week timeframe. It came with a card pre-loaded with games. I thought the default OS and game set was OK and didn't have any major issues, but everywhere I read said to put your own card in it. I went with Tiny Best Set Go and it's been great!

For those looking to play retro games quickly, I've loved this device. It's been a lot quicker to pick up compared to turning on our Switch (bought Contra there) or attaching controls to my phone (tried Razer Kishi). I like that you can exit and pick it up and continue where you left off. I only play up to SNES games; have not tried anything requiring more power but I read this could handle some PS1 games. This has been one of my favorite $35 purchases ever.

The SD cards that come with cheap emulation handhelds are notoriously unreliable. That was probably the issue. Anyone buying one of these should budget $10-15 for a 128GB card anyway.

(A 64GB card is fine if you don't want lots of CD-based games on there, but they're not usually much cheaper than 128GB).

Flash Garlic or Batocera on a reputable SD card and you'll almost certainly have a good software experience.

People keep asking how you get these off tik tok.

I got the H version off tik tok for $28 also. How you buy items off tik tok is you get the app. Then you open it. At the top of the screen you will see a tab that says SHOP. Click on that and shop for what you want. If you never bought from them before they will offer you a code, 25% 30% or 50%. I found if you browse for a day or two with a 30% coupon code saved to your account they will offer you 50% off to get you interested. Some of the codes though will only take a max of $20 off an item.

I waited with a 50% off coupon until Anbernic did a live stream on there and had lowered the price to $47 with free shipping.

If you have experience with an rpi this should not be used as a stock device and probably should be using garlic OS. I'm confused by the frustration you have overall considering you seem to have experience with rpi

I thought R36S can only support Ark OS, it can also handle Garlic OS or any of the linux Os?

yes there are some things on the web archive that people have premade (aka same website as the Wayback Machine but a different aspect on the website)

that has thousands of roms, precurated as a zip file.

No; as I posted above, the SD cards that come with these are liable to corrupt and lose all your save data. Buy your own reputable (Sandisk, Samsung, Lexar, etc) microSD card and flash Batocera or another CFW on it.

Yeah, I think paulk misread the post; they thought NeatMorning was talking about the RG35XX+. Garlic is not available for the R36S, just ArkOS and JelOS.
