Textbook example why you should pretty much NEVER buy a sub from a speaker-first company, unless being coerced into it for the sake of VISUAL uniformity. Even at this laughable "sale" price of $1350, any number of $500-800 subs from subwoofer specialist, internet-direct companies like RSL, Hsu, Rythmik, or SVS would easily beat the daylights out of this thing.
Exactly! JBL and Harman always does this. Im not saying its a bad sub. They post the same over inflated MSRP on the 580/590. Same with their in ceiling and in walls when it goes on sale.

JBL has been making Subs for way longer than most of your subwoofer only companies have been around. JBL subs have been in Movie theaters and Concert venues forever. I used to run two JBL 1500GTi's in my car back in the early 90's, and they were phenomenal subs that were basically a 4ohm version of their commercial sound reinforcement line. With all that being said, yes in this day and age I agree with you, the price for this particular sub does seem inflated for what it is.

Usually the lower end stuff is as you say, and the higher end stuff has double or triple-inflated prices. There are some very good options from speaker companies out there, though. The top end Klipsch subs are well loved, and I've bought multiple Martin Logan subwoofers and they are some of the best that I own. The only unit that has caused me trouble is my 1000W SVS, even though I wouldn't trade it for anything.
Your rule of thumb is okay for beginners, but there's a lot of research to be done beyond that.

Yeah, it's not like Martin Logan, B&W, Paradigm, Klipsch or other SPEAKER-FIRST companies know how to make amazing subwoofers.
Also, JBL makes some high end subs that are movie theater quality.

You can buy an 18" JBL PRX that you can mount a stripper pole on for this money.

The sub has a small footprint, but there's other options that are better in this space.
