Just do the math before you spend on a meal plan, it's not a deal for many families.
Really to come out ahead on the dining plan takes way too much effort and planning and intention for a modest "gain."
The vast majority of people will do better not getting the dining plan. It's actually stressful to utilize if your goal is to get absolute fullest value from it.
And even if you come out "ahead," it's only relative to the cost of what you ordered. Would you have ordered the most expensive dish and an alcoholic drink if you paid in cash? More than likely not. Especially if you have a week-long vacation where you do this day after day.
So even if you come out ahead on paper, you're doing so by ordering stuff you otherwise wouldn't order and using that as your gauge.

Do yourself a favor and take a trip to Universal or Dollywood or pick a park. A la carte upcharges at all of them—-worse than Disney. And the wait times are just as bad—with fewer attractions, worse shows, etc.
Total cost is more at Disney, but that's because it's the best and most popular theme park destination.
Universal, et al., are quickly escalating in cost. And the up charges are by far worse.

Disney falls into two categories: either you get it, or you don't. I grew up with Disney movies, went to the parks as a kid, so Disney trips are part of my vacation choices.
Other people never went to Disney as kids. They don't really care for old Disney movies. They have few childhood memories of Disney relevance at all. So naturally they don't understand the appeal of a Disney vacation.
I'm definitely not a fan of Disney's slippages. Their hiring standards have fallen as a reflection of the company as a whole.
But I enjoy the parks and see them for what they were in the 90s/early 2000s. The overarching missteps of the company I look past because I enjoy what the parks still have from yesteryear despite garbage management.
All these anti-Disney folk will cry about upcharges, yet if they bothered to go to any theme park, they'd be forking over $80-100 minimum per day to "upgrade" their tickets for priority lines. Disney charges $15-30 and they get up in arms. All the B and C level theme parks charge 3-8x that every day of the week.
We get it—Disney isn't a cheap vacation. But neither are any other theme parks these days. If anything, everyone else is catching up to Disney pricing, which should garner more of an outrage given most theme parks don't warrant it.
while on deployment, I went to Disneyland Tokyo in the late 90s.. the only things I remember is how it seemed like half the park was closed, and they really needed someone to walk around and clean up all the leaves. The only rides I remember going on where space mountain and the haunted mansion.
We still go to DL/Cali Adventure during the Christmas season because we love the decorations and atmosphere. The experience at Dl has changed, we spend a lot of time on our phones planning our schedule vs grabbing a free fast pass ticket for the rides you want to do back in the day. Too much planning ahead now vs just enjoying the parks and hopping on a ride or the kids see something they want to do.
