You don't put the plant in the olla pot. You put water in the olla pot next to a plant you want to keep watered. Terra cotta pots like this are not water proof, they will slowly drain water to the soil. This encourages plant roots to reach down and toward your olla pot and makes good use of water. They've been used like this for a very long time.

You can easily DIY your own by having 2 regular terra-cotta pots sealed together. You can find videos on YouTube.

As far as time delay watering devices, this seems pretty cool and a lot less intrusive or complex than a soaker hose. But those little glass bulbs seem a lot easier for potted plants — this one just takes up space, probably better for a large planter box or in ground.
