How do smart sensors help when you don't have a thermostat-controlled smart zone system sort of thing? Our basement stays much colder than our ground level even during the cold season, and would like to see something like this help

It does not really, hot air rise, cold air fall. Basement always the coldest spot, so if you make the basement temp comfort then the top floors will probably too warm. To solve the issue, likely you will need a secondary heat source just for the basement.

The ecobee sensors allow you to set up areas and adjust the system based on occupancy. I have a similar setup and I love having the smart sensor in the basement. It will kick up the heating marginally to maintain the set temperature in the basement while watching TV. I have another one in the upstairs bedroom so the system knows to back off before the sleep schedule kicks in so the bedroom isn't too hot. In my limited experience this seems like the best you can get with a single-zone system.

Interesting, thanks for the testimonial and info. I thought it would be somewhat limited like this, but also hadn't considered it would be that capable either. Being able to "surge" above set temp to force more to cold areas and scale back based on occupied/unoccupied is neat. Cheers

Thanks I wasn't aware of that.
