Thanks OP. Bought 10 at the restock price, with next delivery in 12 months. Will likely cancel after first order is delivered Friday.

will they jack up the price on the subscribed item without notice, or once subscribed at 2.99, it is 2.99 until I cancel it?

I saw 2.99 for a subscription, but after setting up the subscription and going to my subscription page, I see 4.99 (and a 5% discount on it) still a good deal, so I won't cancel it until I get the first delivery

Had 2.99 option and created a new account. Got to the final checkout and still showed 2.99 each but no total shown. Placed order and looked back and it shows$10 for the 2 I ordered. I've had this happen before with staples. It autocorrected when the order was finalized/shipped. I anticipated this, so I used a virtual credit card (privacy app)and set the limit to the correct price+tax. The order was submitted so we'll see if it actually ships with no issues.

**10 minutes later confirmation email came with correct total and virtual credit card shows correct charge.**

The price for future deliveries will be higher. Same as PetSmart, Chewy, Amazon etc. subscribing doesn't 'lock in' the price for future deliveries. Subsequent deliveries are at regular price minus % subscription discount.
