What's the point of extra cards? I think I bought this a long time ago and haven't touched it
If you have the old core set, there are only enough cards to play 2 player, and even then there are cards which could be suitable in both player decks but you only have 1 copy.
This gives you a second set of cards to allow you to comfortably play with additional players without card deck conflicts.
The newer revised core set already has sufficient cards for 4 players.
One of the good things to know about the FFG business model is that their core sets are more akin to demos. They introduce you to the game but you really don't have a complete experience until things get rounded out with a few expansions (often a second core). It also keeps the cost down for consumers so that they don't have to sink a ton of money into the game to see if it is for them or not.
AH: TCG is really good, including as a solo game. It is a deckbuilding RPG with a horror setting. The core is ok -- the included scenario doesn't get you very deep and it feels as if it is over before it started. Don't pick this up thinking you will play the core over and over again -- it is intended for you to move quickly on into the campaigns. I do recommend it as its mechanics are quite fun and it either will suck you in or it won't. $14 is ok -- I have seen Minature Market have it at <$10 several times this past year.
Know two additional things: Like all FFG products, it is a game desperately in search of a storage solution. Secondly, AH: TCG is VERY expensive if it turn out to be your cup of tea. The back catalog of expansions is deep and it is a product that they keep making additional expansions for.

Sounds like it would made it easier.

Not really, it just doesn't penalize players for choosing classes with similar card pools.
That being said, the game is hard and who cares if you stack things to make bad luck less punishing if it's more fun for players. We adjust the token distribution for this reason.
