If you're using a 10 year old router sure. But any mesh router will easily take care of 100+ IOT devices. I would know cause I have over 150 in my home
It really depends on your network context.
Have a 100Mbps connection and a modern wifi 6 network? Sure! Network congestion purely from devices ont he network would impact less than the speed of your internet.
Have 1Gbps+, 100 devices, and a mesh Wifi 6 router? You are going to be limited below your 1Gbps network connection at times. It is vastly worse without a wired backhaul. if your expectation is 'connected' then the count doesnt really matter, but it can and will impact network performance.
Having more devices eventually causes interference and it gets worse in apartment and condo situations.

It is also worth noting that zigbee devices don't talk to the internet directly...which is a very good thing as any one of your wifi devices could theoretically get infected by whatever malware is out there and then go off using 100GB a month in data as part of a botnet, also nuking your network connection.

Most if not all mesh routers have a seperate 2.4ghz channel to parent exactly what you're talking about.

I tried the zigbee but was turned off by it. Price was high and integration with Alexa or google was abysmal. I paid $5 for every switch, plug, bulb. And maybe $10-$15 for every camera. Zigbee is easily 3x that amount,

I would rather continue the wifi for smart devices then pay the higher cost for a higher inconvenience.

In addition to this guy's comment, mesh or not, only so many devices can talk at one time on the 2.4ghz network. Packet collision will occur some devices code to handle some don't.

ZWave uses sub ghz to avoid congested 2.4ghz (BLE, wifi, zigbee all use 2.4ghz) . You pay more but often bring better compatibility and stability, due to the tighter restrictions on the communication standard. 700 series has a blip that is resolved.

These connect to your WIFI and not Zigbee/Zwave if that is important to you.
This actually requires a Thread border router/hub for connectivity, so that can be an issue if you don't have one. (I own one and haven't been able to configure Home Assistant to work properly as a Thread router, so they're just dumb switches right now).

Edit: per another reply, looks like these may be able to work without Matter over Thread.

Do these need to use the 'cap' type cover for a single gang box? Nearly every switch in my house is in a 2+ gang box, unless it's a closet light. Looking to add switch like this and reuse the standard deco cover. Thanks for any insight!

Same here… I'd stick to Kasa for now.

No. It includes a single gang cap cover, but you can also use them with standard decora wall plates. I have about 25 of them in my house in all kinds of configurations.

Only improvement is the Matter certification, which you can also have on Kasa for more money. Tapo is their budget line, and it's nice that it includes Matter. But if you already have a bunch of Kasa, I recommend sticking with that. The Tapo app can control Kasa devices but not the other way around. If you already have scenes, routines, automation in the Nasa app those can't control Tapo devices, you'd have to move it all over to Tapo and control your old Kasa devices from there.

I have a ton of Kasa and a couple of Tapo switches I got on a deal. For now, I'll continue to wait for deals on Kasa and may even pay a few bucks more just because it's all set up. Either brand has worked flawlessly for me and I do appreciate the Matter ones just because I can use Siri to control them. I also got a couple of Tuo smart buttons to use on specific locations and that button requires matter to work.

I technically have the samsung smartthings station which is supposed to be matter certified but i'm unsure how it works with these switches.

Yes, but then you can run into all kinds of dumb issues with smart home hubs and software unless you expose that correctly. It's all just a hassle that zigbee solves automagicly.
Sure. But my post was in the context of the use of WiFi IoT devices need not affect one's regular computer's or TV streaming.

While Thread and Matter are semi-related, they are not the same.

ST hubs (v2 and later?) work well with these. Just use the ST app and scan the QR code come with the device.

v2 only works with Matter through Wifi. I think v3 works with Thread too (not sure! I have v2).

No. These use Matter via Wifi 2.4G, not Thread. So you don't need a border router to use these. They can be locally controlled by controllers such as Google Home and Startthings Hub. They still have all the problems associated with Wifi. They might also still talk to TP-Link servers.

Forgot to write ST stations is both Matter and Thread compatible but i'm still just using it as zigbee hub for now.
