Yes , that's the ferris rod. U can use it to ignite the magnesium . In the past when I've bought a magnesium block from the same company it's always had a spine with its own sparking rod.

If you have this same one, then you'd note it came with a ferro rod that produces sparks. It's the thing on the left in the picture.

And that would be the second tool. These blocks usually come with their own small rod. I've been buying these type of things a long time.

I have a few Bic lighters sitting in a drawer in my shop that have been there since around 2008 or so, all still work fine (and they weren't even new when I put them there, I'm sure they're almost 20 years old)

This survival box provides a striker that can be used for both items to create sparks. It's attached to the ferris rod. As a secondary striker, you probably have a survival knife as well. If all fails, search for a good rock to act as a striker

The one guy that posts and the 100 others that think the same thing. A simple lighter will do the job 99.9% of the time and the other .1% the fire starter kit won't work either.

Easier and cheaper ? Well, yes, but lighters have several weaknesses. Fuel being one, it needs it either butane or something like kerosene. Both of those things can leak and dissipate as their containers are not very durable. Plastic lighters often fail in it's containment of butane so after a while all you have is a sparker and not a very good one at that with limited flint and capacity. Lighters that use kerosene (lighter fluid) are never sealed, they are constantly evaporating it's fuel, a few weeks and it's dry. Oh, and plastic lighters are constantly degraded by the atmosphere, attacks the plastic and butane escapes after it weakens enough. This kit consists of things that don't require butane or kerosene, plus if it gets wet let it dry off and it will work again. Now, there are also other weaknesses of lighters..... ever try to start a lighter in higher altitudes or lower temps or both ? Butane does not do well in high altitudes or cold weather. Lighters are more convenient and cheap.... you absolutely should have lighters in addition to a kit like this.

Add: Whatever route you take to start a fire, understand that it is a skill, develop and improve it. From starting the fire and keeping it lit to keeping it from spreading beyond intended, it all takes skill that you develop. Also starting a fire in different conditions and circumstances, practice so skill is developed and you can start a fire dependably.

You don't need a striker for the magnesium bar. The striker attached to the flint rod is also the scraper for the magnesium bar.

1. Shred some jute fibers apart.

2. Scrape the magnesium bar.

3. Make tiny pile of the scrapings.

4. Strike flint to throw sparks on pile.

5. When magnesium ignites, add jute.

6. Shout fire! I... made... ffiirre!

Making fire from raw material is fundamental as a human. Using matches or a lighter does not teach you this basic skill.

Yes, but this kit (in concept) seems more geared to the bugout bag or hiking which you might not need the lighter for 1 or 10 or 1000 years. The lighter might not work when you need it most so having fire redundant fire starting methods which cannot 'expire' or could be damaged by rough handling is important. Also butane also gets pretty useless in colder temps while lighter fluid likes to evaporate rather quickly.

Yeah.. because we all need "Bugout bags" in 2024.... for the zombies and what-not eh?
